Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

In her introduction, Milne differentiates between fine jewelry (using gold, silver, or precious stones) and the craft field. Although the projects here clearly fall into the craft category, an appealing array of necklaces, bracelets, and earrings are presented, accompanied by delicately rendered illustrations, crisp color photographs, and Milne's easy-to-follow instructions. Projects are within easy reach of the beginner; many consist of assembling beads with silver or copper wire into sets of jewelry for both casual and more formal outings. Materials are readily available from craft or hardware stores, but for the more challenging designs, such as metal brooches with intricate cut patterns, a few tools will need to be purchased from specialist suppliers. From the Back Cover

Making Your Own Jewelry is packed with ideas for attractive, innovative and often surprisingly inexpensive jewelry to make at home. It features over 20 practical and original projects for earrings, brooches, bangles, necklaces and matching jewelry sets in a wide variety of styles and materials. These range from high-fashion, 'chunky' designs such as curtain ring earrings to a more classically ornate crystal necklace. Readymade jewelry components such as beads, semi-precious stones, pearls and shells, together with more unusual materials such as fabric, modelling materials and plastics, all find their place among the stunning designs. As the author explains, attractive jewelry can be made using everyday 'found' objects including wire links, bobbins or hat pins. Beautifully illustrated throughout with specially commissioned color photographs and step-by-step illustrations, the projects are presented clearly in easy-to-follow sequences which explain the basic jewelry techniques required to create the designs presented here.

This review is from: Making Your Own Jewelry: Creative Designs To Make and Wear (Hardcover)
This book has good instructions for creating and decorating beads made of wood and instructions for a variety of jewelry construction techniques. Constructions include stringing beads, connecting beads with wire pieces, and various methods for finishing the ends. The most useful instructions for me are on coiling wire decoratively to join beads, and wrapping beads with wire to "cage" them. However, the majority of jewelry designs in this book aren't very inspiring and look somewhat outdated. The best use for this book is if you can get it at a lower price than most jewelry books, use the instructions but create your own designs.
