Mark delivers the most practical, common sense way to build trust in an organization. We have found him to be the leading expert on peaceful accountability... 'the ability to rely on others to do what they say and support them in the achieving all they committed to'. We found most high performing people in the organization see themselves as behaving very accountably around their own role; however, they don't see themselves as needing to be accountable for holding others to their agreements. The direct result of this behaviour is a culture of blame and dwindling trust.

Using the tools in the book, we learned about 'forgiveness' and 'recovery' from a pragmatic and very business like perspective. That has helped all our impacted leaders engage in more personally rewarding and safer ways. Breakdowns are quickly surfaced and forward motion accelerated with this kind of thinking.

It has been one of the most personally rewarding books for me. As with all Mark's work it focuses on execution, I didn't just set it aside as a 'nice' read. I found that page-by-page my thinking and then my behaviour started to change. I've also been priveledge to witness significant self-awareness and growth in others as they moved from a victim mentality to one of being an accountable formal and informal leader.
In a baffling, overwhelming world of constant change, this book provides clear tools and processes for how you can intentionally live the life you want.

The Making Yourself Indispensable process laid out in the book is simple, easy to follow and well thought out. The exercises in the book were effective in helping me clarify where I rated in terms of making myself indispensable. I was also able to further clarify where I want to go and how to get there. Mark Samuel's system for being indispensable is built on the premise of holding and making one's self accountable. It is this accountability as the keystone of his system that truly sold me on the effectiveness of this process. Do yourself a favor and make yourself indispensable. John

The concept of Accountability is one that should not be taken nor passed over so lightly. Understanding what accountability is and what it isn't, what it looks like in behavior and action and how one can achieve it to live a successful life is the core of this book. I have been on a quest to enhance my personal and professional life in a 360 degree. And understanding the power of personal accountability and expanding it to make myself indispensable has been an amazing journey for me.

Having taken Mark Samuel's workshop related to Making Yourself Indispensable, I can relate to the content of the book easier as I continue to read the book and work the exercises. I highly recommend for anyone who can to also take his workshops as adjunct to reading and working the book. Mark is a passionate human being who has cultivated a great wisdom about what it takes for us to live fulfilling lives.

Samuel tells the reader that life isn't fair, so don't expect to be treated fairly. If you have expectations of being treated with dignity or respect by your "leaders" or if you don't like penny wise pound foolish changes at your company, he tells you that you have "entitlement issues". He offers vague (frankly, fabricated sounding) stories of "breakthroughs" with people his book/methods supposedly helped. He spends a lot of time talking about what's wrong with their career, but usually only a paragraph or two on how he magically helped them improve and it's usually something trite like "You're playing it too small". Wow. Maybe we should "Think Outside the Box" too. The book is mostly a dumbed down rehash of "Who Moved My Cheese", clearly written with a slant to pander to out-of-touch senior executives who don't want to take ANY ownership of the environment they shape for their teams.

This book describes indispensability in the best sense of the word and once that message has been delivered, takes you through a series of questions wherein you self assess. Your answers to the questions are your starting place, a benchmark to refer to later as you enhance your accountability in each area you choose to focus on. For me, the six key areas Mark Samuel focuses on identify the core of what really matters as a way to leverage your ability to contribute, no matter your starting place. Making Yourself Indispensable is a gift of guided, thoughtful reflection, that will result in benefits to yourself and those around you as you integrate what you've learned/re-affirmed into how you conduct yourself on a daily basis. The linkage between Accountability and Indispensability is powerfully made along with an invitation to be aware that accountability comes in many forms, to self and others, and is focused on being positive not punitive while expecting yourself and others to make purpose driven focused commitments and deliver on them. It is a practical guide which is easy to read and has stories to relate to... The powerful invitation/challenge is to be fully in the drivers seat of your own life, professionally and personally; that's the part that takes some thought and is fully worth the investment as you are guided through the process for how to take the next most important actions to create the life you want.
