This double feature is exactly that - good for a cheap price and both films are low budget and better than most B-movies that are shown on the American SF channel. Battle Master Matra (trans.) is the better of the two films. Matra is played by actress Mari Sakurai and the story is that her sister Kisara turned evil after their master Hanzo favored Matra as the better martial arts student five years ago. Matra has learned all she can from Hanzo but cannot complete the final test- to defeat him. Kisara returns and challenges her old teacher and wins with the use of a cybernetic claw she received from the demon lord Grauzas. After she forces Hanzo to teach her the Gale Strike she easily defeats Matra. Lord Grauzas, who appears to have escaped from a sentai, plans on killing Matra but Kisara stands firm that her sister need not be killed. This leads to both sisters fighting together against the villain. Partial nudity as Matra fights topless for half the final fight. The film runs 67 minutes and is quite good for an afternoon break. The other film is Makiriko and is okay for a 60 minute show. A viewer HAS to laugh at the little green demon that sits on the shoulder of the heroine. Low budget puppet but it does make the film. Makiriko is a demon hunter and tracks one down to a high school. Her own little demon swallows the vanquished and the stated goal is that once she has defeated 99 demons she can become human again. Both films could use full length sequels. Battler Sienne Matra has a live-action anime feel and Makiriko delves into the teen supernatural genre. Recommended for the Japanese cinema fan and for under $10.

2.0 out of 5 stars you have to be a fan of Japanese anime October 30, 2011

Both films are lame. They're supposed to be. This DVD has two films that are meant to take Japanese anime into real world / real people level, and in the process still keep the feel of Japanese anime intact. If you understand that, you will enjoy the DVD. If you don't like Japanese anime, you should avoid paying full price and get it used. I'm not sure about Makiriko, but Battler Sienne Matra is worth watching - even if it does look like it was made in somebody's garage and back yard. Very low budget, Z-movie films, few people involved, and heads up, the language is in Japanese with English subtitles. The first film would likely be rated PG, the second film would be rated R. There is violence, partial nudity, and unless you speak Japanese the subtitles don't have any vulgar language. Not meant for viewing by the non-Japanese anime initiated, and nearly anybody else will wish they skipped this.
