I purchased the Makita DF030D as a supplement to my 14.4V cordless drill. I was tired of lugging my cordless drill around the house to remove screws, hang pictures, fix random stuff. I do some wood working and was hoping this product would help in that area as well. I have been very happy with it's weight, size and feel. The driver is small enough to fit in tight...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Tool, May 11, 2009
This review is from: Makita DF030D 10.8-Volt Ultra Compact Lithium-Ion Cordless Driver-Drill Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
I've had this makita drill driver for a couple months and its done more than i ever expected. I originally got the tool to carry around with me to do minor maintenance. I've used it on almost everything i'v done except in those situations where a hammer drill or a high torque impact is required. Also, the little holster that comes in the individual case has been a perfect fit for my tool belt.

5.0 out of 5 stars great little driver, April 19, 2010
This review is from: Makita DF030D 10.8-Volt Ultra Compact Lithium-Ion Cordless Driver-Drill Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
ive had this drill for a while now and for what it is... it is wonderful.. no its not going to drill through 1" steel plate in a matter of seconds.. if you want a huge mega powerful tool obviously this is not the drill for you.. however for working in small spaces, drilling small holes and shooting small screws this drill is wonderful.. mine came with a holster which i felt retarded using so i carry mine in my hip pocket with no problems at all.. i haul this lil driver around all day long at work (commercial hvac) and it always does what i need it to.. yes its a 1/4 quick chuck.. it CLEARLY says that (first line in "Tool Specifications" - "Hex shank 1/4".. i guess if you cant tell that by looking at the drill or by reading the write up on it then maybe you should not be using duty power tools.. 1/4 drill bits are expensive and annoying however makita (as well as others) make a 1/4" adapter (Makita part number 763198.. homedepot/amazon) which allows you to use "standard" bits.. yes the addapter cost more however its well worth the money..

5.0 out of 5 stars IT IS A DRIVER-DRILL! Just a more convenient one., December 22, 2009

ATL Jeff (ATL, GA, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Makita DF030D 10.8-Volt Ultra Compact Lithium-Ion Cordless Driver-Drill Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
This IS a drill-driver. It just operates in a more user-friendly way than an old-fashioned chuck. The box CLEARLY ILLUSTRATES AND DESCRIBES the "Quick-Change 1/4" Hex-Shank" method of accepting bits. Lucky me, I bought mine at Ace Hardware on Black Friday for $80 + tax. It came with a plastic storage box, a nice canvas holster, and a canvas 65-pc accessory kit with every bit you could want, including hex bit drills. The canvas accessory bit kit fits nicely in the plastic storage case along with the drill, the holster, and the charger. It is light-weight and very compact (great for tight spots). Plenty of power. Has a nice LED light that illuminates very well, and stays on for about 15 seconds after trigger release: Bump the trigger to turn it on, use the light to locate your work within the 15 seconds (or bump it again), and begin drilling or driving. It even has a 1-year warrranty on the battery and a THREE YEAR WARRANTY on the rest. Mine came with only one battery, but it recharges fairly quickly (less than an hour).

This is a nice little tool to have around. It will drive 3 inch deck screws and with a socket driver bit it is really handy. Not impressed with battery run time, but you get two.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for What It Is, March 23, 2011

This review is from: Makita DF030D 10.8-Volt Ultra Compact Lithium-Ion Cordless Driver-Drill Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
I love my Makita LXT211 18-Volt LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless 2-Piece Combo Kit; both drills are fantastic, but they are oftentimes over-kill for many of the small projects I have around the house. Additionally, the case is quite large and I end up carrying the case with a bit set whenever I need a drill. I was lucky enough to find the Makita DF030D w/ a bonus 65 piece bit set at a local hardware store. The set included the drill, two 10.8 volt lithium batteries w/ charger, a holster, and a bit set w/ nylon case that folds neatly into a compartment in the drill case. I have had the drill for over a year and I couldn't be happier with my purchase. I seem to constantly reach for this drill over my other ones as it is generally the perfect tool for the job.

Pros:
- For 10.8 volts, this drill has plenty of power. Obviously, it's not going to perform like a hammer drill or provider the torque of an impact drill, but it will drive small - medium screws & drill holes up to 1/4" without strain.
- This drill is light and compact. Less than 2 lbs w/ battery. Perfect for any long project where gravity isn't helping you or if you are working in a tight space.
- 2 speeds and adjustable clutch with 18 settings provides plenty of user control, no excuse for stripping screws etc.
- Quick change chuck for 1/4 inch hex shanks. Allows me to change bits and attachments with minimal effort.
- LED light, useful since most of the jobs in tight areas have poor lighting.

Cons: (Minor gripes)
- The holster is a joke. I'm sure it serves its purpose to those who use it, but I'm the type of guy who would rather let my Leatherman rip a hole in my pocket before I clip it to my belt (Same logic with the drill holster)
- The included 65 piece bit set was excellent, but if I lost it, I would have to repurchase 1/4 inch hex shank drill bits and they are not that cheap. Then again, I spent over $100.00 on this convenience item and if you are looking at this review, you are in the market for one too, so maybe $20.00 - $40.00 extra dollars isn't a big deal.

Overall, this is a fantastic drill and worth every penny in my opinion. I think Makita makes the best cordless drills and this is no exception. Buy it and you will not be disappointed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Other products might be better, January 15, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Makita DF030D 10.8-Volt Ultra Compact Lithium-Ion Cordless Driver-Drill Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
The driver is small enough to fit in tight areas, with a drill or driver attached, that my 14.4 would not fit. In addition, it's lighter and more balanced than my cordless drill. The quick change (hex drive) is ideal for me as I own several quick change drill bits and quick change attachments. The areas where I am disappointed are battery life and power. I find the battery life on my Makita doesn't last a full day in which it's used for a total of a 1.5 or two hours. The product did come with two batteries which comes in very handy for this issue. My expectation of the device was for more driving power than it provides, but knowing it's battery size and it's designed purpose my expectation might not have been realistic (the product still gets dinged for not meeting expectation). I probably should have looked into the TD090DW as opposed to the DF030D for more power. In the end I'm happy that I have the device in the house but if it dies I will not buy it again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Makita 10.8v drill, September 24, 2009

This review is from: Makita DF030D 10.8-Volt Ultra Compact Lithium-Ion Cordless Driver-Drill Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
I absolutely LOVE this drill, and I've only used it for one project. It's got the power necessary for the average job, it's compact and lightweight, and the LED light is awesome! Definitely worth the investment, and I'm glad I got it for myself. My last cordless drill lasted 2 years and died, so I'm expecting this one to last much longer, and the 3-year warranty is a real bonus when most companies only provide a 1-year warranty. I don't have big hands, and this drill fit into my hand perfectly; any woman who needs a cordless drill should DEFINITELY consider this drill, but hide it from your husband!

This review is from: Makita DF030D 10.8-Volt Ultra Compact Lithium-Ion Cordless Driver-Drill Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
Just got the drill and 'discovered' what other's have noted - it does not work with my existing drills. Was mad at first (at myself for not noting this and at Makita for doing it), then thought better of it.

First, the listing does mention 'hex shank' - barely. I actually read the the specs, but I was looking at the 1/4" on spec on the right, not the term on the left. This is just HORRIBLE writing. Also, I had no idea what it meant and that I would have to buy new bits. So I give the product only 4 stars.

Once I got over the emotions, I decided that this was a great product. My wife could never insert a bit (hands too small and not enough arm strength), so she always had me do all drilling and screwing. But she can run a nail gun and skill saw with the best of them! So, now we have a drill that she can use whenever she wants. And the size/weight is better for her and will be easier on me, too. I am not a contractor, so I do not need an 18v battery or 3/8" chuck, nor do I have an investment in drill bits. My bits are over 20 years old and never been sharpened, so an extra $30 for new bits is no big deal.

All in all, the product seems great, but expectations were handled poorly.
