This review is from: Makita 193036-7 Dust Collector Hood for 2012NB Planer (Tools & Home Improvement)
Pulls out most of the chips coming off the blade (95-100%). Installs quickly and easily. Only minor drawback is that it blocks the wing on the outgoing side from folding up, unavoidable I suppose. I would like to see an option for a 4'' connect.

Nice piece, except it does not fit any standard vacuum system. Why they chose to use 3" and not a stardard 2-1/2" shop vac connection is very difficult to understand, and they don't offer an adapter, and I haven't found a 3" to 2-1/2" adapter. So it leaves you to improvise.

Prior to installing this, I was always having to sweep up planer shavings from all over the place. However, the installation of this Dust Collector Hood was very easy, using the two screws provided with the mounted adapter. I then attach my shop vac hose directly to the hoods outlet, and it works great! You still get a little bit of dust, but that's insignificant compared to prior to the hoods installation. This is very easy to install, and well worth the money.

Must have for Makita 2012 Planer,

If you have the Makita planer, you have to have this item to keep the chips from going everywhere. The exit size is not easy to adapt, but as with most chip catchers/dust collectors, a little ingenuity and some duct tape goes a long way towards making up the difference to adapt to your dust collector or shop vac.
It's very easy to install and remove and again, highly recommended to have with the planer it's made for.

Others rated this dust collector poorly. I have found it works well in my garage shop where there is no room for a permemant set up. My big shop vac hose fits in the opening and a bit of masking tape seals the connection. It works fine and is easy to install and remove. I like it fine.

The hood works fine, and I like the way it attaches to the planer so easily. Unlike my old DeWalt, this makes it so easy to take off and install that I take it off when I'm done planing so I can push the planer up against my shop wall.
On the negative side, it seems too expensive and in my mind should have come with the planer. And the connector port doesn't fit either my shop vac or dust collector. I can manage by duct taping it with my shop vac hose, but I sure do wonder what is was engineered to fit.

The hood is easy to install, replacing the plastic cover on the planer, and works great. Shame it isn't an included part with the planer since just about everyone will need one.

This one should have came with the planer. Dust collection is needed on this planer (just to keep the cutter head clear). For the price of the Makita planer, it should have came with it. And why did they make it 3 inch???

This is an insignificant item and I am only reviewing it to point out the important problem with dust control.
I got onto the www with the idea of a simple upgrade from my screaming Sears vac. Instead I found a huge amount of fairly alarming and potentially expensive dust control informaton. The health risk factors are evidently more critical than we thought. It turns out that dust control hoods on devices like planers should have at least 4" and hopefully 5" connections. The volumn of shavings and dust is just too much for the typical shop vacuum to keep up with unless you clean the filter continually and have some kind of cyclonic pre-vac seperator. So, dust hoods should be standard and they should be compatible with the best dust collection machinery and methods. I agree with the overwhelming number of reviewers who think the Makita planer itself is a great machine, but the dust hood really needs some work. ******* Updated review 3/29 Since the initial review I have modified my dust collection system with a Fein vac and a system of tubes, blast gates, etc. Before I just hooked up my shrieking Sears shop vac directly. I now use a tapered connector from the hood to the hose and that has made a big difference. I do not think the Fein is any more powerful. In any event, all the chips are being evacuated properly. It seems that the hood requires a perfect, smooth connection to work properly. So, now I will upgrade this a couple of stars, but the use of a weird outlet size that requires odd or home-made connectors is still bad and so 3 stars it is. Hmm, can't change the stars. Oh, well.

I have yet to install this on my planer, but it appears to be of solid construction, heavy plastic in the Makita blue tradition with a black, steel connecting bracket.
