I am a post and beam contractor that rebuilds and constructs period structures and find this saw fits in nicely between my large makita 16" saw and my 8" saw. The 10 1/4 " saw is much heavier than the 8 but comes with a cast aluminum base and a centered carrying handle. I use the saw mostly to cut 4X4 rough sawn lumber and it works very well. blade brake is a plus. I tried cutting 6 by's in 2 passes and can not believe the accuracy of the cut! This saw could give the same accuracy as my 16 but of course, it would take 2 passes.

The saw shipped with a 32 tooth carbide all purpose blade with thin kerf. I swapped the blade after a few cuts for a DeWalt and found little difference in performance. Again, very happy. most saws ship with a steel blade that is useless. Makita does take pride. One other plus is that the saw is quiet. The motor turns at a low rpm, so much so that hearing protection is almost not needed. All of the controls were intuitive, balance almost perfect, and attention to detail is everywhere.

I compared the saw to others in its category and found that the Makita felt better in hand, and had a solid feel to it, like closing the door of a Mercedes. It was pricey however. This tool will be in my employ for a very long. time.

My only complaints are that the sawdust shroud does not deflect enough of wet cuttings away from the cutting surface so you need to blow the cuttings away to see your cut line. It is fine with kiln dried lumber however. Perhaps part of the motor cooling exhaust could be re-directed onto the cut line to mitigate this problem.

If you are looking for a quality tool that will make money for you, I strongly recommend this product

Great saw! But I knew it would be as Makita makes some of the best power equipment you can buy. I have two 7.25" Makita circular saws one of which is still going strong over 20 years after I purchased it. The other one is over 12 years old. Those saws have been put to use constructing over 30 single family and multi family buildings over that time. I've always wanted a saw that would cut a 2x4 edge on in one pass or a 6" treated wood post in two passes. This 10.25" Makita does that with ease. I can now construct decks with much more ease and speed. I expect the saw to pay for itself just in time savings alone over the next 6 months.

I bought to rip some large beams I came across and Makita has been good in the past but, not now. It just allows for a larger blade but same motor, go figure? Started smoking in just three rips of the beams so, I sent it back. What a disappointment since it delayed my scheduled weekend to another. Nice saw if just using like you would the 7 1/4 inch.. Going to try the Skill worm drive with the Big Foot head on it to see how it does. Will let you know..

I'm a timber framer and picked this up for the smaller timbers and joinery cuts we require. It does do the job and the price was okay but this really needs the blade on the left side of the saw. It's hard to see your cut line unless you're standing and leaning in just the right spot. As you cut your timber you loose sight of your line. It has a nice base and is built very well and has plenty of power. It worked for us but we'd rather use our worm drives if they would do the same cut. In the end it was stolen and I replaced it with a "Big Foot" worm drive style saw with the same diameter blade. It is by far, far, far a better and more versatile saw. We use it for everything now when we really didn't like using the Makita, too cumbersome and backwards.

We are a non-profit organization that builds wheel chair ramps. It's great being able to cut a 4X4 post through with 1 cut instead of having to walk around it with a regular size saw. This saw has worked great for us so far. Before, we have used a Milwaukee version of this saw. I'm not an expert, but it seems like the Makita is a little easier to handle and maybe not quite as heavy. (I have not weighed it). I am very pleased with this saw. And I got a great deal on it, reconditioned.

Quality you would expect from Makita. This is one powerful saw. Itis large and heavy and proved a bit tricky for the somewhat precise work I was doing with it.

Rarely am I moved to write a product review, but I have used this saw daily for about a week now and I am ecstatic about it. I am building a house for myself with lots of natural Douglas Fir beams and trim. The contractor working on the framing has an old Makita beam saw ( the 16-5/16" variety) and I have been very impressed by both its usefulness and how well it has held up for him over 10 years. I wanted one, but rather than have two saws of the same kind on the jobsite, I thought it might be a better idea to order an intermediate size first.

Well, after getting this 10-1/4" saw, I have used it for just about everything and the carpenters have started borrowing it as well. They love its light weight and like being able to lift it up to cut the ends off beams that are already in place.

In the last few days, I've found another good use for it; ripping left over beams for interior trim. It is powerful and tracks better than any saw I have ever used. As soon as that big Makita beam saw leaves my worksite, you can be sure I will be looking to get one of those, too.
