Comments about the Makita 5402A Circular saw.,

This review is from: Makita 5402A 16-5/16-Inch Circular Saw with Electric Brake (Tools & Home Improvement)
This is an exellent value overall. It compares to the Mafel saws without the dreadful expense. The power is about right for the size of this saw, considering the Mafel counterpart is 240 3 phase and has a little more guts but the versitility of being able to use regular 115 volt single phase power more than makes up for the shortage of guts. But, with a saw this big it may not be such a bad idea to feed a little slower anyway. The fence is pretty much what you would expect for the price but the good news is that Sperber out of New Hampshire makes a replacement fence that is second to none. It will make cuts good enough for most uses unless you are cutting traditional joinery and need that type of precision. As might be expected you can throw the blade aside and expect to buy a real saw blade. Overall considering the money spent this is the best 16 incher on the market. For a few extra dollars you can make it a real precision tool. Great saw!

This is one cool tool. It has plenty of power for cutting whatever you want to. I bought the carbide blade for it and found it much better as expected. I think Makita should include this with the price we pay for the saw. The one they put on it at the factory is a joke. They know it's not good enough and you'll be back for the cabide blade. Oh well. That's how it works. Other than that the saw is great. If you are wondering about the amp rating on the motor, don't. It has plenty of juice for deep cutting. The brake is phenomenal ! It stops the blade right now and you'd better be holding on tight or it may jump out of your hands. If you need this kind of cutting capacity , you can't go wrong with this unit

A good saw for the money,

Well first of all the fence is junk,or at least for my uses, and the blade is too, as noted by the previous review. But dont get me wrong, this is a vey good saw,but it could be better. The refinement is not as high as compared to the bigfoot. The saw works well though, but if your welling to sacrifice a few inches and dollars id saw get the bigfoot, but all in all this is a fine machine but could be better.
