I use this drill for those small jobs & hard to reach places and it is great.I have had mine for over 8 years now & have never had any problems the battery's are finely not holding a charge i cant believe they have lasted this long. great tool!

I have 2 of the 9.6v Makita drills. I've had the first one for 10 years and it has been used every weekend and is still going strong today. I've had the second one for about three years (I found a display model w/battery for sale for a price that I couldn't resist). My father had an old-style 9.6v for about 20 years before it finally died after a long productive life. (He went out and bought another one the same day.)

For general home-repair use, these drills are great. They have a good bit of power for their size and the batteries are better than most of the competitors. I have yet to have a battery go bad, my dad bought 2 new batteries for his (during 20 years, this is pretty darn good!) Many of my friends that have other brands haven't had batteries last as long as mine. I have used other brands and I can confirm the claim that the 9.6v Makita is as powerful or more powerful than many of the 12v drills out there.

If you are doing a lot of remodeling or construction, you will probably want a larger 14.4v or 18v, but the 9.6v will work just fine for most people. Today, the more powerful drills don't cost too much more than the 9.6v - so if you think you may need more power you may want to jump up to a 14.4v. (When I bought mine 10 yrs ago, there was a huge price difference.) Good luck!

I was looking for the smallest and lightest cordless drill i could find for the many tasks i have that don't require my larger Dewalts. I needed something for everyday home use, drilling smaller holes in wood and driving smaller screws (especially when you have quite a few) for example. I know that there are smaller drills, however, they normally had the wrong chuck, were typically not variable speed with two speed options, and wouldn't turn fast enough for most drilling operations. I wanted the standard Jacobs chuck for their accuracy and the ability to use standard drill bits without the hex shank. Its size and weight make this drill CONSIDERABLY more comfortable to use, especially when having to stretch and it's powerful enough to drive any length drywall screw through most softwoods without a pilot hole. I find myself reaching for it 90% of the time. Keep in mind, when i need to get serious with larger screws and more than a few, my larger Dewalts are used. I do wish it had an easier to grip chuck, and a ratcheting chuck like those used on the newer Dewalts would be helpful, but i just need to not tighten it as much. This would make it easier to release the bit and it seems to hold just fine without aggressively tightening it. Don't let this keep you from purchasing this drill. If you are accustomed to using the 14v and larger drills for general work that don't require that much power, you'll more than appreciate its size and weight. I will buy another as long as it holds up. Its dependability is to be determined since it is still fairly new. If it fails prematurely, i will post another review if possible and take back everything i've just said.
