5.0 out of 5 stars Nice Combo Pack
I already own an older Makita cordless impact driver(6916)and wanted to have another on hand so I did not have to change bits as often. I mistakenly ordered this model(6980), but overall I like it better than my old one because it has some nice features which the old one lacks. First of all, 6980 is slightly more compact than 6916 which allows that little extra...

3.0 out of 5 stars A great size and quality built tool.
This impact driver seems to have only one negative condition; it is relatively difficult to start a screw and keep the bit engaged in the head of the fastener. When it does slip off, the driver tip punches a dent in whatever you are working on. Philips head fasteners are the worst, with square drives a close second. I bought the kit partially for the batteries and the...

I already own an older Makita cordless impact driver(6916)and wanted to have another on hand so I did not have to change bits as often. I mistakenly ordered this model(6980), but overall I like it better than my old one because it has some nice features which the old one lacks. First of all, 6980 is slightly more compact than 6916 which allows that little extra sometimes needed when getting into a tight space. Another nice feature is the LED light which actually does help to illuminate the area when working inside of a dark cabinet. Finally, the rubber grip ring near the chuck glows in the dark which definitely helps me to find the tool when working inside a poorly lit area.
The drill is not bad either. It works well although it seems somewhat underpowered, but I have found that it is adequate for a broad range of carpentry tasks. The keyless chuck is very good. Battery life with both tools had been good.
One final note- my friend purchased the "same" kit from the big orange home improvement center for a few dollars less. We conducted a side-by-side comparison of the tools. Even though the kits had the same model numbers and the tools and batteries looked identical, both of his tools were rated 1/10th of an ampere less than mine and they did both seem slightly less powerful. I wonder what else could be different inside the tools. I am glad that I bought my kit from Amazon.com!

4.0 out of 5 stars first drill, December 7, 2005
This review is from: Makita 6980FDWDEX 12-Volt Cordless NiMH Impact Driver Kit with 6217D Drill (Tools & Home Improvement)
Getting into wood working along with this boom of impact drivers is like getting into music as CDs replaced audio tapes, or skate boarding when they came out with the double tailed boards. Its essential. So I didn't even think about getting a regular drill, an impact driver pretty much takes care of anything, faster and with less hassle. but it will not do everything a drill does... though i have rigged an impact driver to work with counter sinks... a drill is needed for some things and thats why i got this kit. its good for the price. and the makita impact driver is excelent. I've been able to use panasonic drills at the shop I work at and so far they are the only tool I have found which outdoes this Makita drill. They are also at the tippy-top of the line and quite expensive. And panasonic really only outdoes it for me because i like the grip and the feel of them a bit more. But these Makita drills are great, only 0.1 lbs heavier and super powerful and capable. I forsee getting years of use out of this driver, and being totally satisfied with it. The drill on the other hand is huge and heavier than a 12 volt drill needs to be. It will do the job though and it was free so what the hey? I'm sure that I could buy a lighter, smaller 12v drill but its all the same in end and aside from weight and size, its of good quality and works fine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best tool I've bought in years!, September 16, 2005
This review is from: Makita 6980FDWDEX 12-Volt Cordless NiMH Impact Driver Kit with 6217D Drill (Tools & Home Improvement)
A wonderful addition to your drill/driver collection!! Small and extremely well-balanced, this little gem gives you maximum power with minimum exertion. I have pretty bad carpal tunnel and bought this on the recommendation of a doctor/woodworker friend -- very, very glad I did! Side note: I am a fairly loyal Bosch buyer -- have not historically thought all that much of Makita hand power tools. This impact driver is so well designed and built that I've reconsidered -- since bought the MForce 12 volt drill and the 6" ro sander and am delighted with both. Thank you Makita!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for my work!, March 13, 2006
This review is from: Makita 6980FDWDEX 12-Volt Cordless NiMH Impact Driver Kit with 6217D Drill (Tools & Home Improvement)
One of the guys at my shop had a Makita Impact Wrench and I got pretty used to using it. Then he left and I had to find one for myself. I was hesitant at first with getting an Impact Driver instead of an Impact Wrench, but I'm glad that I did. Getting the free drill cinched it for me. This is a great tool. I use it for transmission work and it's one of my favorite purchases. It makes quick work of a lot of the stuff I have to do.

5.0 out of 5 stars Makita 12-Volt Cordless NiMH Impact Driver Kit with Drill, May 30, 2007
This review is from: Makita 6980FDWDEX 12-Volt Cordless NiMH Impact Driver Kit with 6217D Drill (Tools & Home Improvement)
If you use a cordless drill to drive screws, you'll love this impact driver. I don't know why I did not get one sooner. It made building things a lot easier. Great deal for the price.

I have owned the 12V Makita impact driver for about a year, and I love it. The 12V is powerful enough to drive 3 inch decking screws in yellow pine, but lighter than any of the 18V models - nice if you are carrying it around and lifting it a lot. The combo is a good deal; although the drill is not powerful enough for some jobs, it is perfect for driving pocket screws (the impact driver is too much for those).

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent promo package, January 18, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Makita 6980FDWDEX 12-Volt Cordless NiMH Impact Driver Kit with 6217D Drill (Tools & Home Improvement)
I purchased the Makita impact driver due to the tool's reputation and because I needed a tool with more torque than a drill. The promo package came with a free Makita cordless drill which was so nice that I donated my Sears Craftsman corded drill to charity.

My first used of the impact driver and drill was to create multiple 12 inch deep holes in a tree stump using spade drill bits. The two included batteries were good for 3 holes before requiring a recharge (recharger is included).

I've also since used it to rotate my tires and another job on my front suspension. The impact driver is a very powerful tool and the drill is a very nice addition. For lighter work, the drill has a mode for skrews and bolts (adjustible by trigger pressure) and one for drilling (with 400 rpm and 1200 rpm setting).

I am a happy camper. I now know why tradesmen have Makita cordless tools strapped to their belts.

I've always (well, over twenty years) used Makita cordless drills. If you buy them matched up with the job that you need done, you'll be ok. This was my first impact driver, and with the increased torque available to me, I probably won't buy a regular drill gun again! This is a good buy, two drills, 2 bateries and the charger. Now, go get some work done!
