Makita 743081-8 Sanding Base and Pad

The Makita 743081-8 sanding base and pad are weak, within a month the pad deteriorate and fall apart, not sure what can be used to stop this, its cost is high to replace.

It is easy to install and works as well as new. A good investment if your sander isn't also worn out.

If the base pad shattered, check to see if Makita is still honoring a 2003 recall for two models.

The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is that I feel the hook and loop system is inferior to the peel and stick that I use in my shop at work............however, they both come with pro's and cons. The main problem with the hook and loop is that the hooks wear out, get clogged, and render the sander useless after a while......and these pad's aren't cheap. It would be nice if you could just replace the hook and loop part of the pad.

However,

For the sander I use at only occasionally at home, I find the hook and loop to be a good system since the discs are available for a reasonable price on amazon, and with prime.........I can have them shipped right to my door for less than going to home depot. Also you don't have to worry about using a old peel and stick that might not stick so good. So for occasional use, I think these are great.

These pads will disintegrate for no reason. I have never seen this on any of my other sanders. This sander has very little use and when I went to use it the other day, the pad was pretty much dust - hook and loop still like new. I would have to think this would be a dangerous situation if you didn't notice and went to do some high speed sanding, as well as ruin your work. Makita should replace these for free - otherwise get a different brand of sander all together! They wont last and you could put the money spent on these things towards a quality tool.

I ordered this after the original pad disintegrated. I checked out the previous reviews on Amazon and the ordered this along with a set of sanding disks to get free shipping. It was an exact replacement, easy to install and I have used it a number of times with no issues. I would recommend buying this, although I have no data on longevity.

I received this base for my Makita orbital sander within a few days of ordering and it was simple to attach to my sander. It's like having a new sander again.
