5.0 out of 5 stars perfect if used with an IMPACT DRIVER
I've owned this chuck for a few years now, and am very pleased with it.
It is very well made. With a little practice it is a slick, quick, sturdy chuck.

If my memory serves me correctly, this item is intended to be used with an IMPACT DRIVER.

This chuck was great until it locked my bit in and then would not release it. I struggled with it for about an hour before I was able to get my high dollar Dewalt titanium bit out. I've owned this chuck for a few years now, and am very pleased with it.
It is very well made. With a little practice it is a slick, quick, sturdy chuck.

If my memory serves me correctly, this item is intended to be used with an IMPACT DRIVER.

To load a bit properly requires the following steps:
1. insert the bit and loosely tighten the chuck by hand
2. wrap you hand around the chuck, grasp it medium tight and power up your impact driver. This locks the bit securely in the chuck and is essential to proper operation.
3. Drill and drive to your heart's content.

I have never had any slippage problems when using the above technique.
If you use this chuck enough to develop some skill you can often save some
time by performing steps 1 & 2 together using the spin from your impact driver.

To remove the bit perform step 2 with your impact driver running in reverse.

I suspect that the folks who are having problems with bit slippage or removal are not using this chuck with an impact driver, or not following the instructions provided.

Although not intended for use with a drill, I find I can do so by setting the clutch to just the right level so that it clicks madly while I grasp the chuck (see step 2) to provide some sort of impact-like force (set your drill to the highest speed possible for this step).

Hope this helps clarify things a bit.

4.0 out of 5 stars almost perfect, January 20, 2008
This product is perfect if you are using a quick connect drill/driver. We use them in our cordless impact drivers. The chuck is keyless, so changing drill bits is easy, and then with the quick disconnect on the driver, you can just remove the chuck and slap in your power bit to screw the screws. It saves lots of time in most of our applications. The one we bought to test we have had for 2 years now, and has lived through some hard use. I would recommend this product to anyone.
The only complaint I have is that we had to modify them to fit into our sioux pneumatic bit drivers. The post was a little too short to lock into the quick connect.

This chuck was great until it locked my bit in and then would not release it. I struggled with it for about an hour before I was able to get my high dollar Dewalt titanium bit out. It seams that the chuck is stripped inside it so that when you try to loosen or tighten the chuck now the jaws remain motionless. I was shocked to have this happen since Makita is a favorite of mine in most of their tools and this chuck seems sturdy. I'll give the Dewalt chuck a shot.

4.0 out of 5 stars Deserves a Better Reputation, April 26, 2011
This review is from: Makita 763198-1 Keyless Chuck (Tools & Home Improvement)
I only recently purchased mine - so I cannot attest to it's durability - but I still felt this chuck deserved a little "damage control" with regards to it's ratings.

A lot of reviewers have complained about a clutch that prevents sufficient tightening on drill bits. That clutch is actually a spring-loaded mechanism that allows the user to single-handedly tighten the chuck when done correctly. There are essentially no instructions included with the chuck, so it's largely Makita's own fault that their product is being reported as faulty. I had the same feeling after initially experiencing problems similar to other users. With a little experimenting however, I discovered that in order to fully tighten the chuck, you must grasp the collar and pull toward the rear before you squeeze the trigger on your impact driver. This engages the internal mechanism and provides the necessary friction to torque the jaws onto the drill bit. If you don't do this, the mechanism "ratchets" as others have complained and doesn't tighten onto the bit.

Actually, the "ratcheting" occurs regardless of how hard you pull on the collar. The impact driver simply has more torque than your hand can override, so I think this ratcheting effect is intended at least partly for safety reasons.

I'm not sure that having an impact function is even necessary with this chuck. If the chuck collar is held to the rear with proper force it should tighten down on the bit when the trigger is squeezed. I assume this partly in theory, but also because the chuck works properly in my Bosch 26618 when set to drilling mode, during which the impact function is disabled.

After reading reviews of the DeWalt brand impact driver chuck, it would seem that it functions in the same way.

Four stars because proper instructions would have saved me the time of figuring this all out on my own. My only other complaint would be in regards to loosening the chuck jaws. It will throw drill bits if you're not quick off the trigger once the bit is loose. This is not specific to Makita but is inherent to the overall design.

Otherwise, this chuck is built well and should satisfy those familiar with Makita's quality.

I agree with Mr. Mooney that this product should only be used with an impact driver. I tried to use it with a regular drill and sure enough, the bit got stuck. Connect it to my impact driver in reverse and it pops right out. So maybe the lesson is to load bits with the impact driver then put it on a regular drill to use but that seems like a lot of work to me! Nice product other than that.

2.0 out of 5 stars Less than I expected, January 12, 2009
Given the high caliber reputation of Makita, I was surprised at the poor performance of this product. The racheting feature that apparently is designed to prevent overtightening just has the effect of not tightening the grip at all. Drill bits of all sizes slip right out, often staying behind in the material. This makes removal awkward at best. The overall construction and machining seem good, but a flaw in the design. I'm returning mine.

I use an impact driver that has an electrical brake. Apart from the bit tending to slip out rather easily if I release the trigger quickly enough to prompt the brake, this adapter is perfect for what a needed.

Another thing to note is if you open the chuck to it's full extent, if your driver goes into impact mode it causes the claws to become stuck. I can't vouch for all chucks, but it took a lot of time and frustration for the claws to move again and it happened multiple times. As long as you're careful when releasing your bit, it shouldn't be a problem.

I would rather carry around a cordless drill along with an impact driver than use this chuck on the impact driver. The unit itself is solid and feels sturdy however it often locks up and with a little use and age is already rusting. Take my advice do not waste your money on this and put it towards more tools

4.0 out of 5 stars 2 Drills in 1, January 13, 2012

This review is from: Makita 763198-1 Keyless Chuck (Tools & Home Improvement)
I've seen many people have two drills. One impact driver and one drill to do what you can do with this guy. One impact driver with this product and you can drive and drill, or drill and drive, with the best of them. Plus, with using it with your impact driver you now have a hammer drill and can drill into concrete (with the right bit of course).

Great accessory with any impact driver!

Converted my hex driver into a drill. One tool for both jobs. Drills most holes in wood without the hammering action and is easy to load/unload the bit.
