3.0 out of 5 stars This thing is a beast
5 stars for quality, but 3 stars for usability. This thing is WAY too heavy and beefy for vehicle use. It feels much more appropriate for working on a large boat. I felt like I was wrestling it the entire time. (In case you are wondering, I am almost 200 pounds and work out.) Also, it is so large that I could only use for large body panels - the corners and tight spaces...

Everything about this product screams quality, the pads, the bag and of course the unit itself are all very well constructed and designed.

It has the same 5/8" thread size as most angle grinders so you can use it with any of the wide variety of attachments made to fit angle grinders, just get some locking nuts from any grinder. It actually makes many of those attachments much more useful than they are on a standard angle grinder due to its lower speeds and the greater control offered by the loop style handle.

Attach a fine wire brush wheel to easily make brushed metal, or use a spiral sewn cloth wheel with some polishing compound to bring metals to a mirror finish. Use it with a diamond disc for easily slicing through metal or wood. With a set of diamond polishing pads you can polish granite, marble and other natural stones to a high lustre. Attach ordinary microfiber towels or sponges to the hook and loop pad and you can buff or clean just about anything. I have even used it with grinding wheels meant for a bench grinder to sharpen my knives and garden tools.

Of course it is also a great sander and famed in the auto detailing industry as one of the top (if not the best) circular car polishers on the market.

What sets this tool apart from the pack is the fact that it can handle heavy torque loads without slowing down, even at low rpm. I have tried other similar tools (circular polishers and VS angle grinders capable of low speeds) which had no problems handling torque at higher speeds but could not handle much at low rpm without slowing down or wavering. That functionality is crucial to many delicate polishing and grinding applications where you need an even cut without removing too much material.

This thing is very comfortable to use, runs smooth and quiet, does not overheat, and it can stand up to a heck of a lot of abuse. What more could you ask for?

5.0 out of 5 stars Makita Polisher. Faster and better than my porter 7424!, July 18, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Makita 9227CX3 7-Inch Hook and Loop Electronic Polisher-Sander with Polishing Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
Hi everyone.

Oh yes. You've got me! I'm a Porter-Cable 7424 6-Inch Variable Speed Random-Orbit Polisher user and this is my very first rotary (i was scared to death about trying this on my car) so my review is from an enthusiast point of view.

I like car detailing very much but two years ago i knew nothing about it so i started looking at the internet for answers to questions i didn't have at that time about car care. You can find a lot of information about what polish to use (i prefer menzerna over everything else i now know by the way), what pad to use, what wax to use, how to wash your car, how to polish it and the list simply goes on and on but, when trying to decide about what polisher to use things starts to become fuzzy.

Some people tells you the porter it's the best for the beginner.

Some people tells you can't go without a FLEX XC3401 VRG Orbital Polisher Intro Kit

And almost everybody tells you if you're a Pro, use a rotary!!!

Now my findings:

The hing is tough, the porter it's for almost perfect paint finish that you need to polish or you have too much time to finish. It's just too slow to achieve what you need if your paint finish knows automatic car wash that gives you, a beautiful swirled surface you'll notice some day under the sun. The solution: Try a rotary, but there's a catch. Rotary are told to burn the paint if you don't use it carefully but if you use some very easy to understand techniques, you'll get a beautiful paint finish a LOT faster than the one using the porter.

The makita is:

- Faster
- Quieter
- Heavier
- More practical
- More comfortable

Than the porter.

The electronic speed sensor gives you constant speed and the dial let's you select the desired speed very easily. This thing while not the heaviest, it's HEAVY and controlling it requires a lot more muscle at the beginning than the porter but you need to use it for less time so it compensates the weight.

If all you need it's to spread wax over your car, this thing may be overkill but if what you need is to polish faster and better with a dependable tool look no further. There is a DEWALT DW849 8 Amp 7-Inch/9-Inch Electronic Variable-Speed Right-Angle Polisher but it's heavier and believe me, you don't want more weight while polishing vertical surfaces like you car sides so my recommendation, buy this one!

After polishing 4 cars ( I'm a hobbyist ) i love this one and i'll keep the porter for more delicate polishing. If you can have both... why not???.

What i don't like about the Flex it's that it only works with one size of pads while the porter and the Makita can use many sizes means more flexibility.

Hope this helps!

5.0 out of 5 stars Makita 9227CX3 7" Electronic Sander-Polisher, May 27, 2006

This review is from: Makita 9227CX3 7-Inch Hook and Loop Electronic Polisher-Sander with Polishing Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
Excellent tool. The polisher is easy to control once you get the hang of it. It easily, quickly, and with plenty of power applied the liquid car wax I was using. The tool felt well balanced and well behaved. The speed control is delightful to experience - maintains the same speed under load or no load conditions.

The tool came with two bonnets, one to apply compound and another for final polishiing. The compounding bonnet is the only one I used since I discovered this same bonnet also polishes to a deep luster as the wax you're applying hazes over - the bonnet polishes this haze to nice deep shine. I also used a small spray bottle of water to wet small areas to help spread the wax - it worked great. I am ordering two new compounding bonnets for spares. Suggest you test out the bonnets and find out for yourself before ordering more....

I am really happy with this tool, and I feel it is well worth the money. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to buy a similar tool.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best available, January 20, 2006
This review is from: Makita 9227CX3 7-Inch Hook and Loop Electronic Polisher-Sander with Polishing Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
The Makita 9227 buffer is one of the top two if not the best available. It has more than enough power and with the electronic speed control, maintains RPMs even when putting pressure on the tool if used as a sander/grinder. The handle is probably the best feature of this tool, giving you great control when buffing/polishing.

I have been cleaning boats for a long time, and have worked with a lot of different products. This is by far the best buffing wheel out there. The speed control is seperate from the trigger (it's not controlled by how hard you pull it). That makes things way easier. It does great work, it's very comfortable and easy to use. I have actually dropped one in the water; it cut out and then worked the next day. Better than the Milwaukee, Dewalt, Craftsman, or any other one for that matter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality work with a quality product..., January 18, 2007

I use this makita to buff out my cars. For the past 3 years I was using a dual action polisher, which did a fabulous job. However, it took forever to do one body panel, and if any paint imperfection was deeper than a swirl, it had a difficult time removing it.

The makita is fast, durable, and very well made. Knowing that a rotary can easily ruin your cars finish I went at it very slow to begin with. The variable speed clutch allows you to slowly start spinning the head when you start as opposed to the machine ramping up to 1500 rpm right away. The bale handle makes for easy operation, and the entire unit weighed less than I had initially thought.

Overall, I am very happy with this purchase. The storage bag is top notch as well. I came away very happy with the entire process, from order, to shipping and handling, it all went very smooth.

I am a 71 year old woman, and yet I find this product very easy to use. I haven't used the sander feature; mainly the polisher, but it does a great job. I am very pleased with it and would highly recommend Makita products.

5.0 out of 5 stars Professional Detailers, February 14, 2009

While it isn't exactly the lightest machine (Flex 3403), it is definitely the one with a big range of RPMs. I've had no problem tackling the toughest imperfections in paint while still having the power to "jewel" the paint into another level. When coupled with the correct backing plate, it can do almost any job out there.

Pros
-lightweight
-broad range of RPMs (600-3000rpm)
-2 types of handles included
-bag is big enough to fit 2 machines
-very versatile with different backing plate options

Cons
-bail handle gets scratched easily
-doesn't come with the foam pad in the picture

Overall its an excellent machine. Perfect for people starting to detail cars.

This is a good tool. The motor is powerful with plenty of torque and yet well controlled with the variable speed selector. Most of the time I use the 300 rpm setting. At all speeds the machine is forgiving. The handles are well designed and allow a good range of grips. Some reviewers have commented negatively on the handles. Seems to be a non-issue for me. Especially nice if you are ambidextrous. I have worked with the tool for periods of 2 to 3 hours without fatigue. I have owned Makita tools for over 25 years. This one seems to be of as good quality as my electric 10" miter box (purchased in 1979). The cord is long but to work around a car I use a 12 ga. extension cord. I am using foam pads (purchased separately from Palm Beach Automotive) and the wool pads that came with the tool. Learning curve is not steep. Very important to me is the noise level of any tool. Construction work is bad for your hearing. This tool is quieter than many I have used. I do not intend to use this as a sander and can't comment on how it would work. I compared this with the Porter-Cable machine. It is a better tool. A few dollars more less do not matter when you will have a tool for the rest of your life.
