The wheel sander consists of ~ 4" long cylinder with bristles (steel/nylon in various grits) extending out from it. It is very useful to clean up rough sawn timbers and in finer grits to raise the grain.

Raising the grain can give your pieces a pleasant 'tactile' dimension as well.

If the rough sawn timber is too bristly, this tool can reduce to eliminate the bristles. It is good for removing surface stains, grit & grime prior to finishing.

The tool is of Makita heavy-duty journeyman quality. Not a cheap throw-away.

makita wheel sander is a work horse. no matter what application you may choose to use this wheel sander. I use it in woodworking to sculpt timbers. The wheel sander raises the grain of the wood. taking away the softer pulp wood between the grain.Givind you a weatherd or rustic look to your wood or timbers. its a pricy tool but has many uses. will also strip paint rust just about remove any thing on any surfaced. amazon and there supliers were very prompt with delivery very happy.

I bought the wire wheel for my Makita 9741 Wheel Sander. It is a quick way to open the grain or age wood in appearance. It works great on larger flatter areas but not so well into small recesses ( to get into tight areas I use a similar but much smaller wire wheel in a 1/4 inch die grinder). It's pretty much useless on tight grained woods like mahogany or poplar, but gives a great old and weatherbeaten look to more open grain woods like oak or ash. I have also found that I can make inexpensive pine or cedar look as if it sat in the desert sun for 50 years in a matter of minutes. Experiment with different types of wood till you find the results that you like. The abrasive nylon brush supplied with the sander may be useful for aging a painted finish, but is useless for aging bare wood. The sander itself has functioned flawlessly and wheel changes are simple to accomplish. This tool allows me to work on complex shapes such as moldings but as above it wont get into small recesses.

I own a wood reclaiming company and we use this tool to brush all of the old barn wood material we harvest. Typically barnwood has lots of dust and hay on it, this tool does an impeccable job removing all of it leaving a clean piece of lumber without destroying the texture and original color of the material. This machine reduced our processing time to one tenth of what it was. It doesn't really send the material as much as it does brush the material. It gives you a similar finish to you brushing something with a steel hand brush or a grill brush which is a clean more polished look. Though it is like any sanding device, the longer you hold it in one spot the more material and damage it will do. Overall this is one of the best powertools I've ever bought though it is very specific to your project.

I have been re-modeling my cabin and needed to remove a dark stain that was used to coat 11 rough sawn timber beams that support the kitchen ceiling. I used belt sander and 32 grit sanding belt to remove the top surface and the Makita 9741 with wire wheel to remove dirt and tone down the stain in the saw marks I left on the surface of the beams. I then used a clear lacquer to seal the beams. The result was rustic weathered looking beam. The Makita 9741 produced the surface we wanted. I initially started with a wire wheel on an electric drill. This was taking a great deal of time. The Makita produced the same results as the drill and wire wheel, but reduced the time to do the work by a great amount.

Just finished my 1st project 32x24 cabin complete exterior rough sawn lumber boards. I brushed the entire exterior with the brush that came with the sander and it still looks new. This sander does not remove the kirf saw marks , it cleaned off all the dirt and debris from air drying the boards for 8 years.

This sander absolutely met my expectations. I am using it to clean up a very large order of dried rough-sawn redwood, who's rough appearance I wanted to maintain. The lumber had a lot of oxidation on the surface, as happens with all wood over time, as well as random particles from the environment. Applying any finish to this wood requires that the surface be cleaned if a quality result is to be likely. Pressure washing is a typical approach, but not appropriate for my situation. Sanding with even a 40 grit sandpaper virtually wipes out the wood character.

I started using a wire broom style push brush. It worked extremely well but was far too labor intensive. The amount of loose material that came off the lumber was unexpectedly high, and it left the boards just right with all their character.

I hunted for other solutions and found this. This thing does a great job and it has paid for itself a few times over for me, with the stock nylon brush. It doesn't go down deep, I still follow up with the wire push brush but just a few strokes and I'm done. The makita removes a bit of the wood character but hardly noticeable. I don't think it brings out any grain ... I think it mostly just removes particles that have little to no bond with the wood core. If you apply finish to these particles, I think it would be better to have a little grain removed than have the finish fail over time.

The sander has a nice little depth adjuster in front that allows you to control the pressure the brush puts own as it spins, I think you might be able to optimize this dynamic to get the cleaning function and raise the grain a little but I didn't try, I had full pressure all the way since that was very quick and gave me a pleasing result.
