Still a good gun,

These Makita nailers used to be the best 3-1/2" gun you could get, in my opinion it is way better than a Hitachi A90 series gun. This newer gun seems to have more plastic pieces than the previous ones, but that seems to be standard these days. I am curious to see if this latest Makita gun will last as long as the others we run.Although the Makita is a well balanced light weight, heavy duty gun if I'm not shooting 3-1/2" .162 nails, I always reach for the Hitachi A83...

Hey..it's a nailer! It does what it's supposed to do with very little jamming. I had bought two of these for the construction of my shed in the backyard. It fired over 3,000 nails and maybe only jammed 8 times -- and most of the time it was at the transition point between two strips of nails.I would have loved to have had a rafter hook on this nailer -- when working up high your looking for a spot to put the gun. I also would have liked a case, for the general home owner the cardboard box just doesn't last long. Overall I'm very happy with the nailer, it still deserves a 5 since the hook & case do not affect it's functioning! Also, the thread is 3/8" NPT -- so be prepared to have a reducer should you decide to run a 1/4"NPT line.

Framing Nailer,

I like this nailer over all. I used this nailer mostly for single fire mode to attach nailers in remodel work. I am not a framer so it serves very little purpose compared to other reviewers. However, yesterday I put in some 1/2" sheathing and had the depth adjuster malfunction on me. Its like the wood was too hard for it so when it went to kick back after it fired the reprocussion was so strong that is would bump the depth adjuster to a different setting every time. It sucked, I was wondering at first if it was just me and after about two strips of nails I figured out that it was the nailer. After I stop trying to adjust the depth adjust anymore the thing went all the way down to #1 setting - which means the most depth. I don't know, I've used other nailers for sheathing in bump mode and we used the compressor for depth adjustment. This was the first time using a self adjusting nail setter but still it chopped me up that I had to drive a few unsung nails home after I set the gun down. I hope it is just me, that the wood was so old and dense and uncommon that the nailer was just new and I wasn't use to it but still I am thinking of buying something else that is a little more tested out there and works. No bueno.Just for note, this gun hasn't been tested throughly, I am basing this report off a less than 10 hours of use and that single use yesterday with sheathing. Anyways, good luck and happy hunting - for a nailer that is.

Excellent Shooter,
This review is from: Makita AN922 Round Head 2-Inch to 3-1/2-Inch Framing Nailer (Tools & Home Improvement)
I bought this gun on Amazon during the recent sale (it was an excellent sale). I used it this weekend for the first time after owning it for about a month. Couple of surprises for me - the air fitting I had from an old air tool (1/4") would not fit and I had to go out and purchase a bushing for it to fit the 3/8" threaded opening. No big deal - lack of planning on my part not checking before I was climbing the ladder. The second surprise was that the instruction book and Home Depot both told me it was 22 degree nails. I could not find any 22 degree nails anywhere and after a call to the regional Makita rep - found out it will work with 21 degree nails. So I bought a box and shot a bunch. I punched a 3 and a quarter nail through three pieces of walnut into a piece of oak (while testing depth settings). WOW. One more thing I should mention which is only a personal preference - I bought the nails with the plastic joiners and you have to watch the flying plastic when you fire the gun. I will try the wire joined nails at another time.Excellent gun - all I wanted it to be on the roof doing framing. This gun is a little overkill for the average homeowner but I use it when helping my friends do construction framing. If you can afford it, you won't be disappointed.

Granted, this is not the run-of-mill nailer these days with several other brands changing their styling to bright smash and grab colors. I prefer professional, understated tools that you can't see through tinted glass and that doesn't shout "steal me" on a job site or from my garage or distract me from what I'm working on. Its quality is very refined and it is job oriented with exceptional feel to its grip and balance. Easy loader; just plan on getting a 3/8 to 1/4 reducer. Maybe that's because some people use 3/8 and this is built to handle higher pressure than competitors, but I'm not sure. I am sure that this kicks the pants off from all but the Hitachi's older nailer. The tradeoff is that this is probably less likely to break down with heavy use but when it does the parts may be more expensive. I'll use this for a couple of small jobs and then private use after, so I chose it over the Hitachi. If I were a contractor, I might side with the Hitachi just due to parts availability. I am impressed with the quality.

What more could you want in a nailer? This has good balance, plenty of power to drive through hard oak, and has only jammed once for me in two boxes of nails (8000). Like any round head nailer, it is big and tough to get in some areas, but I like the full head over the d head any day. Just gives me more confidence.Like any Makita tool, this one is made right. It does not have a case, but we tend to stop using those after a few scratches and the newness wears off. Don't keep buying the dispoalable nailers, get a good tool that will last, and hold up like this one. Time is money and this tool will make the money.

This is a great price for this nailer. I had this gun for about 4 years and as a framing contractor I use it a lot, and have never had a problem with it. I like the depth adjustment. It's near the trigger and with a little practice you can adjust it quickly and easily. I keep it at 8 for sheeting, 4-5 for framing and 1-3 if I am doing a lot of toe nailing. I wish it came with a rafter hook. (I added one at the air intake, it works O.K. These rafter hooks are aluminum L-shaped with a hole in it. You take off the air fitting, slip the rafter hook on and reinstall the air fitting. I bought two 20 years ago and can't find them any more.)

Round head nails are widely spaced in the strips as opposed to clip-headed nails. This means reloading twice as often. I bought my gun through Amazon, at a great price, under $200. Personally I am very satisfied with the gun, but if I used it full time I would get a clipped head model.

I got a good deal on this, used it 2x, and bought another one. I'm glad I did; it's for me the best all around frame gun. It combines durability (taken a couple big falls no problem) with finesse like the adjustment knob and slide. Never jammed in a several boxes of nails. Like the slide. A nice detail is the rubber piece for doing finish work (used that 2 times) and how its held on the slide. The only nailgun I've seen that looks good (hitachis are hideous but good IMO). Good power when I nail advantek, it nailed well less than max depth, and does ok when I was nailing oak, although you still need to set the nails. Still better than others I've used. Great tool!
