Just like my old one, which stayed with my ex--in other words, a great sander. However, one star off for the new switch, which is hard to operate. And I don't even have big fingers. Can't imagine what they were thinking, except that I guess they think the rubber sheath over the switch protects it from dust. An important thing to remember with these sanders is--and make this clear to anyone borrowing it--you must be very aware of the sandpaper disk coming off during sanding and immediately stop. If you don't, the velcro on the rubber disk base will be destroyed very quickly. Then you have to replace it. No fun.

I have several of Makitas Random orbit sanders and they just keep getting better! I have "Other" major brands ... none come close to the ease of operation and fast uniform removal of material. The Makita service center is always there with the correct part and on time when in need of a part. I use my sanders almost daily in my work so a good sander is mosst important to me. You can't go wrong with any Makita product!

Over the years I have come to expect only a quality product from Makita. This sander is no exception. Though not necessary, the rubber on the body and top does give a good grip, especially with fine sawdust on your hands. The 3amp motor has plenty of power and the pad continues to turn even under pressure (unlike the milwaukee). Lastly, the vibration level is very low which makes it nice if you are sanding a large piece or have to use the sander for a long period of time.
I was so pleased with this sander, I bought a second one and use it for fine grit sanding.

You can spend more money for an orbital sander (and less), but this little number has the best combination of function and price. It is the lesser price of the two Makita corded orbital choices here on Amazon, but I don't really need the ability to adjust the speed, so I went for the lower price point of this model. I use it where electrical power is available, so the higher power/longer lasting corded model is fine for me and I did not look to see if Makita has this among its wonderful cordless tools. I highly recommend this sander.

It has the usual Makita power, functionality and comfort to use. I love being able to just change sandpaper by pulling the discs (also from Amazon) off and putting a new one on. Makes it very easy to go through several grits of paper on a single project without major hassle. I work outside on sanding (always), with a simple face/dust mask, so I don't use the dust catcher (just sweep the sawdust (mulch) into the garden.

I just finished using it for about 3 weeks on almost a daily basis on a number of pine cabinet doors that I built, as well as stripping the finish off of some pre-finished kitchen cabinet doors and I could not be more pleased. It does the job very well with minimal hassles. The only thing it does not do is go right into the inside corners of projects... but that is not usually an issue, and it works so well on the rest of the piece that I don't mind a little hand-block time on inside corners.

This is my first random-orbital sander, and I was really impressed with how it works. It is easy to use, not as loud as many reciprocal/vibrating sanders (though I still use noise-blocking headsets when using for any length of time), easier on the hands than the usual square vibrating sanders, and does a great job.

I have had this for around a year now. It is a fine sander. I has the classic Makita feel- solid the only problem I have with it is the dust port is so small hooking up a vacuum is a hassle. other then that a well made quality tool.

I have used several different brands in our deck business. The Makita far outperforms any competitor for the amount of sanding per SF it can get done vs Milwaukee, Porter Cable, Dewalt. The pad and sanders do wear out but because it sands so visciously. If you want to get done get this sander and get a spare pad.
This sander pays for itself in 4 hours.

I've had a cheap Ryobi sander for years now. It works fine, but it's poorly balanced and isn't suitable for creating a nice final smooth finish. I bought this Makita based on owning a plethora of other Makita tools that I've been very happy with. It sands fine, but when you take it off the work-piece, it starts spinning so fast that you can't put it back down without creating a gouge. It spins so fast that it's dangerous; when I first used it I tried to slow it down by tapping it against my leg and it ripped through my pants and cut me. No other sander I've used spins this fast. Some models don't even spin until pressure is applied to the pad. To me, this is a total deal breaker. It's called pad dampening, and is a basic feature of these sanders. Apparently the Makita doesn't have this feature which to me makes it completely unusable. If you're doing something where you never need to pick up the sander, then this is fine for you, but when you're sanding a large quantity of items, and need to pause for more than 2 seconds between pieces, forget about it.

The sander itself is GREAT. Put a coarse pad and some pressure on it, and wood will come off FAST. Great random orbital action, doesn't leave marks. I'm a huge fan of makita power tools, and this one is the same sort of quality....probably will last me a lifetime.

The little dust bag does work, to a degree. Mine was full of ultra fine dust after my project. However, it only catches 50-75% of the dust. You really have to have a stronger vacuum to do any better. This was the annoying part, there's no convenient way to hook up your shop vac to the connection to boost vacuum flow. You can make an adapter with duct tape/or etc, but its another little project.

Dear Makita: For an extra couple $'s, you could include a 6' plastic hose and a connection for a shopvac, and that would dramatically improve dust pickup on what is otherwise a great power tool for pro's and DIY'ers. Thanks for considering.
