About Makita's 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless Tool Series
As one of the pioneers driving the cordless tool revolution, Makita changed the game with its breakthrough 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless Series. Three years after its debut, Makita's LXT Series has grown from seven to over 35 tools, providing a wide range of cordless solutions for professional tradesmen. Makita also added 18V Compact Lithium-Ion for cordless power in a more compact size. Makita's 18V Lithium-Ion batteries and ENERGY STAR rated Optimum Charging System provide several benefits over old battery technology. When compared to traditional 18V Ni-Cd batteries, Makita's 18V Lithium-Ion batteries have 40% less weight, longer run time, and five-times lower self-discharge to keep cells active and ready to use at any time.
Makita's 18V Lithium-Ion battery delivers 2,000 cycles--2.5X more than Ni-Cd. In addition, built-in shock absorbing features help protect the battery, and sixteen firm-holding contact terminals deliver constant high power. During the charging process, a built-in memory chip in the battery communicates with the Optimum Charger for a more efficient charge, extending the battery life. Makita's Optimum Charger is also faster: it will charge an 18V LXT Lithium-Ion battery in just 30 minutes, and an 18V Compact Lithium-Ion battery in only 15 minutes. Makita also offers a Rapid Automotive Charger for 18V LXT and 18V Compact Lithium-Ion batteries that plugs into 12V DC sockets equipped in most automobiles and trucks for added mobility. Makita's growing line of LXT cordless tool solutions features a wide range of industrial-quality power tools, including driver-drills, impact drivers, impact wrenches, saws, grinders, screwguns, rotary hammers, and more. The LXT Series also offers a jobsite radio, rechargeable flashlights, and several different combo kits.

I bought this Tool about 1 year ago and used it only 10 times. It already broke, I can't change gears anymore.
Now I have to deal with the warranty what is long enough but I would never buy that tool again. I got most of the other LXT series and I am very happy with them. The hammer drill is great. The other impacts drills are great, too. The saws and grinder are great as well. But don't, don't, don't waste your money for the hybrid drill, you will have a hard time finding all the bits you need for drilling in concrete, the only way is with special adapter chucks and than you are right back with a normal drill. It really doesn't work as good as advertised. But I give 5 Stars to the rest of the Series LXT. I am a big fan of Makita battery tools.

Sadly, this tool flat doesn't work. I have used mine a few dozen times. After it died, I sent it into Makita. They quickly repaired it and returned it, free of charge. It now works, but the 4-in-1 gears never meshed right, and I can tell (audible que) that the repaired tool is no better.
Basically tools in this price/voltage range have high expectations. I would like to push this tool hard and have confidence in it, but find myself babying it. Really all I trust it to do, I can do with my 12V tiny hand-held drills and drivers. It would be great to be able to carry only one driver around to do all these things. We're not there, yet. There's a reason no other manufacturer has one of these on the market, the other manufacturers have the composure not to release something that can't perform to expectations.

I have had this combo drill for around a year now and never had a problem. I use it mostly in impact driver mode for wood screws.
The amazing thing about using an impact driver for screws, as many people are finding out, is the ability to back out your screws without damage! I use soft, expensive stainless steel screws and occasionally have the need to unscrew one. Using a hand screw driver or conventional driver will inevitably result in stripping the screw head, then you will need to resort to pliers or vise grips. This takes time and completely destroys your screw as well as often causes damage to the surface of the workpiece. Enter the impact driver! When the driver detects resistance it automatically enters hammer mode and puts forward force on the screw, only turning as quickly as it can without damage. This gives the impact driver the unique ability to back out even soft screws without damage. The screws are completely reusable! This amazing machine also has the ability to function as a two speed drill and conventional driver, although the clutch is a little slippy, even on the strongest setting it often does not set a screw properly. I end up using it in impact driver mode for pretty much all my screws. You do have to be careful though, this thing will drive a screw right through your workpiece! If you are looking for an impact drill for drilling through concrete, you may want to get something larger and less complex this is a 1/4" drill. A 1/2" or larger drill would be better suited for that purpose, and it would be a shame to ruin this beautiful piece of equipment. Also, being a 1/4" impact driver it would likely be underpowered in the case of, say automobile lug nuts, in which case you may also want to go with something larger. I believe for my general construction and around the home use this is perfect, no need to lug around two to three separate tools! Hard to find, but a best buy in my opinion, the battery life is excellent and the batteries charge in less than 20 min!
