Chainsaw runs great. It starts easy and cuts trees fast. The manual included covers pretty much everything and includes good part diagrams. The saw was made by Dolmar in Germany so parts are available from makita and dolmar dealers. The manual is also available online from Makitas and Dolmars website.

The saw was great only thing after cutting down two or three trees the chain that I brought for it had to be taken out of the saw and sharpened.

Have not had this long, only the time to buzz a couple poplar trees down, and buzz some firewood logs. So far it is EXCELLENT. At only 46cc, seems to have quite a bit more power than my neighbors 50cc Husqvarna, but that saw is several years old, so might have lost compression. This thing starts like no saw I have used before. VERY easy, when cold, and when hot. I hope to put in many years with this saw. I will update my review after more time with it, for longetivity. Soon I will be going to take down at least a dozen large pine trees, and cut them up for firewood. Should be a long day, but I'm sure this saw will handle it fine. Dolmar/Makita really needs to market their equipment better. In THIS class saw, I think it out performs a Stihl, for less money.

Update: Used this saw almost daily for a couple weeks. Starts just as easily, and as far as I can tell has picked up some RPM after a thorough break-in period, and it is now even more gutsy than before. When it comes time to replace my aging big saw, it will be with a Dolmar/Makita saw. I can say I still prefer the Stihl chains over the oregon chain found on this one (though, this chain is still excellent), but otherwise, as long as they are available, all my chainsaws will be wearing blue paint :) The krauts really got it right on this brand!

I have a Dolmar 16" saw that I really like. Dolmars are hard to find, but Makita owns Dolmar, so when I wanted a second saw, I decided to go with Makita.

I've used it for maybe 6 hours so far, and it's working nicely. Starts easily, runs well, not too heavy, doesn't beat up my hands with vibration. But when I set it next to my Dolmar, they have exactly the same amount of cutting length on the chain! So it would appear that either the Makita is a 16" saw, or the Dolmar is an 18" saw. Either of those would come as a surprise.

I called Makita to ask about this, and they said they measure the length from a particular point on the bar that is internal to the body of the saw. Everyone else seems to measure from the point where the bar exits the body.

It worked out okay, because I actually *wanted* both my saws to be the same size. But if you're thinking about ordering one of these, be aware that you don't have 18" of chain to cut with.

By the way, the replacement chains that are offered by Amazon are the right size - which is to say, they're labeled as 18" chains, but they're really 16" chains by normal standards. So don't even think about using them with another company's 18" saw.
