Update: Used this saw almost daily for a couple weeks. Starts just as easily, and as far as I can tell has picked up some RPM after a thorough break-in period, and it is now even more gutsy than before. When it comes time to replace my aging big saw, it will be with a Dolmar/Makita saw. I can say I still prefer the Stihl chains over the oregon chain found on this one (though, this chain is still excellent), but otherwise, as long as they are available, all my chainsaws will be wearing blue paint :) The krauts really got it right on this brand!
I've used it for maybe 6 hours so far, and it's working nicely. Starts easily, runs well, not too heavy, doesn't beat up my hands with vibration. But when I set it next to my Dolmar, they have exactly the same amount of cutting length on the chain! So it would appear that either the Makita is a 16" saw, or the Dolmar is an 18" saw. Either of those would come as a surprise.
I called Makita to ask about this, and they said they measure the length from a particular point on the bar that is internal to the body of the saw. Everyone else seems to measure from the point where the bar exits the body.
It worked out okay, because I actually *wanted* both my saws to be the same size. But if you're thinking about ordering one of these, be aware that you don't have 18" of chain to cut with.
By the way, the replacement chains that are offered by Amazon are the right size - which is to say, they're labeled as 18" chains, but they're really 16" chains by normal standards. So don't even think about using them with another company's 18" saw.

Have not put a lot of hours on the saw, but like it so far. Out of the box it took about ten pulls to fire it up the first time. Only three pulls the next time I had to use it. Read morePublished on January 21, 2014 by Matthew A.
