5.0 out of 5 stars Makita Hammer Drill
I don't often find the need for a hammer drill with my home projects but I did need one to install a closet flange into a concrete basement floor and I didn't want to spend a lot of money on a tool I would hardly use. The reconditioned unit came as any new unit with a case, manual, depth guide, and side grip. Included was a registration certificate and a one year warranty...

1.0 out of 5 stars CPO = Heavily Used
I got my first unit of this Makita drill and it arrived with a rusty spindle and a mangled chuck to the extent it wasn't clear if it could hold a drill bit. The package came with a friendly note that all returns would be at my expense and an address it could be shipped to.

1.0 out of 5 stars CPO = Heavily Used, February 15, 2009
This review is from: Makita Factory-Reconditioned 5/8" Hammer Drill Kit w/ Light & Case HP1621FK (Misc.)
I got my first unit of this Makita drill and it arrived with a rusty spindle and a mangled chuck to the extent it wasn't clear if it could hold a drill bit. The package came with a friendly note that all returns would be at my expense and an address it could be shipped to.
I called Makita and explained that paying them to return this pawnshop grade condition tool was not an option and they sent me another unit out and a return label for the other one. (In their defense the customer service rep was very nice on the phone) This drill was not rusty at least but the chuck was badly gouged as well. The LED on this drill also couldn't serve as a nightlight, so don't expect that to be useful. Apparently Makita's factory reconditioned tools mean they are end of life used tools in a new plastic case.
If you want a good CPO tool buy Milwaukee or DeWalt.

The reconditioned unit came as any new unit with a case, manual, depth guide, and side grip. Included was a registration certificate and a one year warranty with a 30 day trial period. It came in near new condition and it performed flawlessly. It shipped and sold by CPO Makita. I'm quite happy with my purchase.

3.0 out of 5 stars Weak Chuck on Drill, March 14, 2009

The only problem I have had is the bits will slip in this type of chuck. The other type that has a key to tighten the bit is much more secure.

Makita HP1621FK Factory RECON 5/8 inch Hammer Drill with L.E.D. Light and Case Extremely good product. I was concerned that a 5/8" drill would be too bulky but was extremely pleased to find this drill is smaller and lighter than my 18v cordless drills. I am delighted with this product.

I've had this for several months now, so it's not a quick look and review. The condition when I got it was obviously used, but in very good shape. The reason I bought it was that I having major difficulties drilling holes into my concrete block basement walls to insert Tapcon screws to mount pegboard and brackets on the walls. I had been using a standard variable speed drill and went through concrete bits like they were made of lead. I bought the hammer drill hoping, yet not really expecting, a big difference.

After using this drill in hammer mode to drill the holes, it was very obvious it made a big difference. The same brand bits were lasting much longer and drilling much quicker. I'm guessing that the hammering is either cleaning out the hole or letting the bit rest for a minute period as it drills. Whatever the reason, it made a major difference.

The drill came with a nice long cord, a nice change from the shorty cords that some tools use under the guise of safety or convenience. It also had a pretty sturdy plastic case.

I really have no complaints as this tool does what it's supposed to do at a good savings from a new one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Needed a hammer drill, August 19, 2009

This review is from: Makita Factory-Reconditioned 5/8" Hammer Drill Kit w/ Light & Case HP1621FK (Misc.)
Needed a hammer drill for a small amount of work. this was a recond drill. It looked ok and worked fine. I bought it for a good price. Overall happy with this drill but if I had lots of work to do I would have bought a better unit.

1.0 out of 5 stars waste of money, August 7, 2009
This review is from: Makita Factory-Reconditioned 5/8" Hammer Drill Kit w/ Light & Case HP1621FK (Misc.)
the chuck on this drill is useless. it sounds like plastic inside and stripped and failed to sufficiantly hold the bit (a small 5/32 tapcon bit) on the first bit i used. After a very long day of tightening the chuck with pliers just to get the job done, the drill smelled like it was burning up too. Had I paid more than $40 for it, iwould be livid, 75-100 tap con holes out of a drill is totally unacceptable. I've been a professional carpenter for +17 years and the tool market has gotten so bad over the years that Makita is the only brand I can usually trust. I sincerely hope that this cheap depot/lowes homeowner model is not a trend for them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Drill, August 2, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Makita Factory-Reconditioned 5/8" Hammer Drill Kit w/ Light & Case HP1621FK (Misc.)
Reconditioned drill was like new, case and depth gauge looked new. Very good value, excellent 1/2" drill, good chuck. This is a good drill for home or light commercial work. It is about the same size as my Craftsman 3/8" drill only capable of 1/2" shank drills. Quick shipping / good purchase.

This review is from: Makita Factory-Reconditioned 5/8" Hammer Drill Kit w/ Light & Case HP1621FK (Misc.)
This drill did everything that I needed it to do. It makes drilling into brick or masonry extremely easy. It has a switch from a regular drill to a hammer drill and has a capacity for drill bits up through 1/2". The drill looked as close to new as you can get and still be called refurbished. You won't find a better buy than this.
