Makita 1/4" die grinders,
By
This review is from: Makita GD0600 1/4-Inch Die Grinder with Paddle Switch (Tools & Home Improvement)
There has been widespread use of the Makita GE0600 1/4" die grinder by Bonsai hobbyists for years; that model is now discontinued. Looking at the present 3 available models, one would usually think that a GD series preceeded, or was a lower grade than GE series, and that an 0601 was better or later than an 0600. Folks, I know this has nothing to do with the fact that Japanese read from right to left; but with theses die grinders, its just the opposite. Here's what they are:
GD0601 - standard 1/4" die grinder, same specs as the old GE 0600 but with switch moved to the side, and slightly restyled. Incidently, Amaozon identifies this as air powered, but it is (like all three of these) electric powered; you don't need a compressor. GD0600 - Similar to the above, but with a paddle switch. According to Mr Recto's review here in Spanish language, the paddle switch must be contiuously held on to operate. GD0800 - Similar to GD0601 but with 5 different speed variations ranging from 5000 to 28,000 rpm. The other two above models are fixed at 28,000 rpm. the other 800 series model is also apparently discontinued, but had variable speeds all below 5000 rpm. Doubtless there are technological and safety improvements also, but the specs and user features differ as described above. All can be used in a manner identical to the discontinued Makita GE0600.

I had used a Habor Freight die grinder before untill I burned it out which always felt dangerous to use, getting this makita was like the difference between heaven and hell of the die grinder world, this Makita is Great, solid, quit, very very smooth, and comfortable and secure to use, I highly recommend it. Well worth the money.

Husband reports that he loves this die grinder. He is an engine machinist. He reports that it is quiet, light & powerful. Also, half the price we would have paid for buying it from the suppliers here in Canada.

This would be the 5th name-brand die grinder I've owned - and so far the best. Operation is super smooth and ergonomics are very comfortable. First Makita anything I've owned and I'm very impressed. Stacks up well against grinders that easily cost double.

Powerful motor, easy to control, well-made. Chuck requires 2 wrenches to lock, which is inconvenient.

I bought this wile rebuilding the engine in my 72 Bronco. I had to shave down some parts of the exhaust manifold to get them to fit with my new aftermarket heads and this thing worked beautifully. It is every bit as powerful and strong as a comparable air tool.
If you want an electric grinder when a air tool just won't do than this is your product.

I boiught thios for my son who is taking a High Performance Engine program and he said that this tool worked well removing the burrs from the heads he was working on. He said it was easy to handle and was powerful enough to remove the material in both cast and aluminum heads.

This item was just what I wanted and needed - very easy to work with, safe to use, and in excellent shape. I used this for porting heads and manifolds out and a dream to work with.

This thing is huge compared to my pneumatic grinder, but it is nice not having to haul out the compressor and fire it up for small & quick jobs. Haven't used it much so I can't comment on its durability, but it looks like it'll work for my jobs (automotive, motorcycles, household). For its size, seems well balanced and easy to use in tight spots.
