6.6 AMP Power with SJS to Protect Gears
The GD0800C is powered by a 6.6 AMP motor that delivers 7,000 to 28,000 RPM with soft start for smooth start-ups. The electronic speed control maintains constant speed under load, and a variable speed control dial allows the user to match the RPM to the application. Labyrinth construction protects the motor with a complex set of channels, prohibiting dust and contamination. In addition, the protective zig-zag varnish seals the motor and bearings from dust and debris by creating a barrier under rotation. The GD0800C is engineered with SJS, an innovation from Makita that protects the gears by automatically disengaging the motor should the grinding wheel accidentally catch or bind.

Comfort and Ergonomics
The GD0800C weighs just 3.5 pounds and is built with comfort and ergonomic features for extended use. The slender double-neck aluminum gear housing is designed for easy handling, and the slide switch is positioned on the small circumference barrel grip for easy operation. A side handle can be easily installed on the side of the tool.

Versatile Design for a Range of Applications
The GD0800C is a versatile and powerful die grinder engineered for a range of applications including pipe fittings and small scale grinding. The GD0800C is built for welders, plumbers, ship builders, automotive technicians, HVAC, and general contractors seeking a best-in-class industrial quality die grinder. The GD0800C is just another example of Makita's commitment to innovative technology and best-in-class engineering.

About Makita's Super Joint System (SJS)
Super Joint System (SJS) is an innovation from Makita engineering where the motor armature and spiral bevel gear are linked by a coil spring. If the grinding wheel catches or binds, the coil spring relaxes and disengages the gears from the motor. As the grinding wheel stops, the gears and motor are protected. Makita's growing line of SJS-equipped grinders includes models ranging from a 1/4-inch die grinder to a 7-inch angle grinder.

I'm using this tool for sculpting wood with "Kutzall" type burrs. I have been using a Foredom flex shaft tool for years but was looking for something with a little more guts and power for mass stock removal. The Makita did all this and more--in additon to its raw power I also find the rigidity of the tool helps make even fine cuts more controllable. Not shown in the illustration above is the multi-position removable side handle which adds greatly to the ease of controlling this workhorse. Over the years I have owned many Makita tools, and this die grinder, like all my other Makitas, is a superb tool and a great value.

I also purchased this tool for use with "Kutzall" carbide bits, specifically for use with their "Wood Blaster" 2" domed bit since it has a limitation of 10K RPMs. The adjustable speed of the GD0800C fit the purpose beautifully, allowing amazing control for scribing branches into beautiful Adirondack style railings. Call me a bit cynical, but not every Makita tool has been a winner in my 30-year carpentry career. This one sure is.

Yes, it's a large tool, but the extra weight and leverage helps to keep it from deflecting off your workpiece. It runs very smoothly on ball bearings, has excellent ergonomics and enough power to not bog down or overheat even in hard daily commercial use. I expect it to last for decades. Sure, it takes two wrenches to change a bit, but if you've ever had a router bit slip and ruin a piece of work, you'll appreciate the security and safety this gives. If you have small (or large) hands, you can still choke up on the metal shaft for precise control.

The one downside I see with this tool is that it could use an optional ringed handguard to keep precious flesh away from more aggressive bits and the collet when choking up. A bit of plastic would make this a superior tool Makita.

I've had this unit for over a year which is used quite often at my shop. It's use is for cutting plastics and metal, basically needed a REAL duty tool to get away from wasting time with the dremel. This unit has a lot of torque and really grinds, combined with the proper cutting bits and you've got a really strong tool. Its pretty unforgiving so if you mess up, the unit can yank you around.. real important that you are cautious when using this tool.

Only thing thats a bit weird, not sure if its only my unit or how these work in general, but it takes about half a second from when you flick to the switch to when the rotary starts turning, almost like a slight delay. Overall its a very smooth and reliable tool.

I bought this tool for work on my Bonsai trees, which sometimes need carving. I have also recently used it to carve 2 lava rocks into flowerpots. It is very powerful. Even at low speeds, it cut through lava rock like it was nothing. I like the fact that it has a side handle that can be attached, as this tool is heavy and I use it for somewhat delicate work. With the handle, I have good control. It does vibrate a lot, so I find it tiring to use for a long time, but that may improve with some practice. It can be hard to remove the collet & bits, so I keep some silicon grease in my tool box, with it. (On a related note, I wish Makita sold a storage box designed specifically for this.) You should be aware that Makita also sells a 1/8" collet, which would allow you to use it with bits designed for a Dremel tool.

I bought this tool 2 days ago and am now returning it. I read the posts that mention it gets hot, but I had no idea how hot. I was simply polishing aluminum and smoke started coming out of this thing. Even before that you had to wear gloves because it was too hot to hold onto. This tool does not work.

I bought this grinder to do porting and polishing work on both a cast iron manifold, and an aluminum intake manifold. It worked like a charm. It didn't get too hot after 30 minutes of strait grinding. I would recommend this tool to anyone needing a die grinder that doesn't have an air compressor. Its a great on the spot tool. You can really feel its quality when you compare it to any off brand grinder, like a harbor freight one.

Twice I had to send it back to Makita to have the bit removed. Lot's of suggestions on Google on how to remove bits from this tool as it seems to be a common complaint, none of which worked, 'just tap the end' (this worked for some people), or 'leave some room so you can get a tool behind it and give it a tap outward', or my favorite, 'heat up the bit with a torch'. It just gets stuck and will not come out. Otherwise, it's a great tool, as are the dozen or so Makita tools I've owned over the past 30 years.

It looks like the designers at Makita got it right. This is a very smooth and quiet die grinder. There is no perceptible vibration at any speed and the motor sound is minimal. But don't expect silence when you put grinding wheels or burrs into the unit and begin removing metal. The cutting action will make far more noise than the motor or bearings. The noise then gets irritating so wear ear plugs and/or ear muffs.
My use has been grinding cast iron and steel castings to prepare them for painting. I have also used it to grind mower blades, a job which is now much easier and safer than using my 4 1/2" wheel grinder.
The weight is just right. I was afraid it would get heavy after a while but it didn't. It has enough mass to make controlling it feel good without making it too heavy for extended use.
Unlike many tools, the Makita does not get hot to the touch. Neither the motor end nor the gears and bearings gets more than warm which means the motor and bearings are designed right and of high quality.
The most important feature of the 800C is probably the variable speed which is 7000 to 28000 RPM. The importance of this is due to the fact that all grinding wheels, burrs, wire brushes or felt bobs have different maximum speeds at which they are rated to be safe. It is not wise to exceed the rated speed of the cutting tool. Variable speed also allows the user to adjust the speed to make the most efficient cut or the smoothest finish. Without this feature you would not be able to safely use many grinding wheels or wire brushes and control would be much more difficult.
In many hours of use I have not needed to use the highest speeds, staying below 19000 down to 13000.
