Somewhat disappointed,

I've had good luck with Makita over recent years, so I picked this hammer drill up on sale at HD. It seems well-made and powerful, but I'm disappointed in the keyless chuck, which cannot grab any hammer drill bit very tightly, leading to the chuck spinning around a stationary drill bit on occasion. The chuck is at least partly plastic, and seems to have a built-in stop mechanism which prevents it from turning any tighter, and I've tried bits from a couple different makers, all with the same result. Also, even with brand new bits, this drill doesn't drive through concrete block like it should, not very much better than my old B&D drill did with standard masonry bits. With the hammer driver off, it's an excellent standard drill, and I use it for that now with good results. But I'm already looking for a new hammer drill. I'd suggest you pay a bit more and get a good keyed metal chuck on whichever model you buy.

I got less than 30 minutes of use out of this hammer drill before the chuck failed completely. It hammered and drilled very well, but after changing drill bits a few times, the chuck would not release the bit. The bits that came with the tool dulled very quickly. I have used many Makita tools in the past with good results, and this is the first tool from Makita that has disappointed me.

Used a discounted Hammer drill and burnt it out.I purchased this Makita because of the price and that it is a Makita drill.I have 2 Makita drills and I have had them for years.I have used this drill to drill through solid concrete block in my home to run cable. The drill did a fantastic job.For the money this is a good buy,I recommend it.

I bought this drill to replace my cheap old Black & Decker which had finally bit the dust after about 12 years (pretty good for a $30 Chinese drill). I bought it because it seemed nice, powerful, and Assembled (not MADE) in USA.
As soon as I went to test it, though, I noticed a lot of run out in the chuck. I did a little drilling, and it seemed to work fine, although it did emit a rather high pitched whine from the motor. I switched to Hammer Mode, and it started to turn, then stuck, and smoked. I took it back, and switched back to an el cheapo Chinese made Black & Decker.

Bottem line, Drill performs well. My only complaint is the plastic chuck is cheap and I would rather have a metal one. The chuck work well with no problems. The built in light seemed like a gimick to me. I have to admit. The built in light works well. My last heavly worked makita lasted me 10 years so the brand is good value.
