This is my first rotary hammer purchase. Been using them on the jobsite for several years, and have been able to use and review several different brands. To be honest, they all performed well ( Bosch bulldog extreme, hilti, dewalt) but being a little partial to Makita, I have to say this is the quietest and smoothest of the bunch.

Another great tool made by a great company. I've never bought a Makita tool I didn't like. This SDS drill will make your old keyed-chuck hammer drill seem like stone-age technology.

The diameter ratings for these drills are not ever very accurate. They are ratings for suggested maximum diameter bit that you would want to use all-day long. If you had to grab a 2" coring bit and make a few holes, though, I've no doubt this "one-inch" drill will handle it fine.

One suggestion, if you buy the keyed chuck with SDS shank so that you can use keep using your old round-shanked masonry bits, buy a high-quality one. The SDS action is really powerful. I bought the cheapest chuck Amazon sells and it literaly blew up the first time i used it to drill a hole with a 1/8" bit. Then I bought the bosch chuck and it works great.

This is a very nice tool to add to a general contractor's collection. It is lightweight, runs all day, has a good quality chuck and is easy on the user's body. I will say that if the job is busting into cured concrete (i.e. jackhammer mode) this tool is little too light. It takes "little bites" through a 4" slab, although it does get there eventually. It hammer/drills quickly and accurately using the SDS-plus bits (about $6-10 each) and the tool profile is skinny so it does get into vertical corners readily.

Length: 2:00 Mins
I rented a $3,000 Hilti Hammer Drill to break up a couple of 3 or 4 ton boulders in our backyard - couldn't really move them but they were in the wrong place. While the Hilti bore into them like butter it cost $80 a day. I drilled holes about 8 inches apart and use tapered punches to split the rock. While the boulders were two or three times the depth of the bit an 8 or 10 inch bit is long enough.

The pieces I ended up with were still large because I wasn't sure exactly what I wanted out of them but I had to return the Hilti. I looked an Amazon and found this and thought I'd try it out. If it worked it would definitely pay for itself. It's not as fast as the Hilti but it does work! I've attached a video using a 5/8 inch bit. I really wanted to test it even though I use 1/2 inch bits for splitting the rock.

Have been using a similar drill for years in Europe. Decided to buy this here in the states. Still really nice! Good grip, not too heavy, excellent handling, comes in a box which I like a lot. The energy that this thing provides is great. I had to drill a hole on a concrete block where a previous drill failed. Took about 5 seconds for this one. Absolutely love Makita products.

This hammer is a must along with the larger lineup that is available for those of us who need to work the concrete after it gets hard. This tool takes care of the smaller jobs easily and its only major problem is that it is likely to be stolen from you if you don't guard it well.

I have only used it as a hammer drill to drill into concrete for a carport cover to be attached to the metal poles. It worked great. I wished I had bought it earlier....would have saved tons on rentals over the years. Everyone that does handy work will need a tool like this at some point.
