I needed a tool to repair and maintain concrete and brick structures around my home. I checked the option of renting a light duty jack hammer/drill combo but these were in the range of $50 to $125/day from either Home Depot or local tool rental outfits. I did some looking around and found a few tools that offers combination drill and hammer action with "hammer only" setting . Of the choices, I found the Makita tool to be well built and offered the lowest cost from Amazon. As a bonus the combo package was very attractive with a useful angle grinder thrown in for a small increase over the drill only cost. I had no prior experience with such a tool but as an avid DYI'er thought could could be worth the investment to tackle many projects using this tool.

I have summarized the pros and cons of the rotary hammer below.

Pros: Well made and feels solid as all Makita tools I own although this one is made in China. Runs very quite for a power hammer and designed to idle until the tool is engaged on the work surface. This allows to minimize fatigue from vibration when used in the "Hammer only" mode. The tool feels very ergonomic and comfortable to hold while working at different angles and positions. There is the option to set the chisel tool at any angle and lock it which allows a lot of flexibility and convenience in engaging the tool on the work surface. The quick chuck offers easy insert and removal of the tools designed for SDS chucks. Using a Dewalt 1.5" SDS chisel, I was able to strip tough mortar coating off the 5 raisers of my front steps in less than 4 hours which otherwise would have been a very tough job not to mention taken me most of all day with a chisel and a hammer.

If you are now using a pistol grip hammer drill, or thinking of buying one, STOP NOW. Drilling in stone or concrete with this drill is like a hot knife through butter. Plus it's really light in weight. Way faster than any pistol grip drill I have used (including DeWalt, Makita and Bosch.) This is what you want for Tapcons and anchor bolts. Also great for chipping and chiseling - there are many styles of SDS chisels available, and the tool's light weight makes it easy. And you always need another grinder, and this Makita is way better than that $9 Harbor Freight grinder you have been using. Put a diamond blade or cup on it and get to work!

UPDATE 9-14 Makita grinder's motor crapped out. Bought a Hitachi.

I've been using this for 4 years now and the hammer gets power into tight spots. I've drilled 5/8" x 22" into concrete, like butter. I've also used it for tapcons. I don't think the power to weight ratio can be beat. One of my favorite tools! The grinder is a simple one speed unit, but powers through steel with a thin kerf hilti blade.

I bought this set after trying to remove tile on a concrete slab with a chisel and hammer. Got a selection of various types of chisel bits at the same time. You will need these. Anyway, what started as a 4-5 hour task ended up taking only about 20 minutes to get all the tile up. Another 20-30 minutes with the grinder to knock down the high spots left by the adhesive. Another 20-30 minutes for clean-up. I do ten- fifteen bathroom remodels a year now and they're almost fun using these tools. The grinder generates a lot of dust, so I put a fan behind me and one in the window to suck it out. I've used the rotary hammer to remove wall tile and floor tile with minimal damage to the wallboard. Easy to control with very little practice. I've owned this one for about five years now. This set is a remodelers dream.

I can not explain how awesome of a tool this is. I originally bought it about 9 months ago to drill some pilot holes in my concrete patio at my previous house. I drilled the first hole with a normal hammer drill. It took about 10 minutes. I drilled the next 15 holes with this drill and it took about 5 seconds per hole.

My new house is all brick and the garage is concrete block so I use it all the time. It has never failed me and actually drills holes in concrete faster than a wood bit will drill a hole in wood. I also bought the tile chipping bit for it which I will use to demo a couple of bathrooms once I get around to it.

The only con is that SKS bits are expensive. I bought mine here off Amazon. You can also buy an adapter kit for it so it will use regular bits (though not sure how well the regular bits will hold up).

The Makita Rotary Hammer drill is one of the best tools I have acquired. I needed to drill four holes into a concrete ceiling but only had a smaller rotary hammer drill. Forty-five minutes later I had one quarter-inch deep hole. Then I ordered and received the Makita which drilled all four holes in less than twenty seconds. Sorry I wasted those forty-five minutes.
