Beautiful design. Light weight and powerful. Hammer function very useful when drilling cement, masonary, or if using long wood screws or lag bolts. Overall this machine is great for everything around the home or shop.

After years of using and appreciated the Makita Nicad lineup, I finally made the plunge to lithium ion. Glad I did!
I choose this particular model for it's power/weight ration and versatility (the hammer function). With my intended uses, I didn't feel the need to purchase the "green" model with it's 3.0 ah batteries. I prefer the setup as light as possible. And with the quick 15 minute charge, I'm good with these batteries.
Well designed and balanced tool. Versatile and powerful for it's size, and also has a improved and excellent chuck. No loose bits here, even with the fast acting brake. Ergonomics, are typical Makita, the best out there, and the trigger as usual has a great response and feel-and allows precise feathering of speed.
The led headlamp is super bright and a welcome addition. I took at hard look at the competition, Dewalt. Milwaukee, Panasonic/etc and Makita still has the overall best cordless tools hands down, IMHO, when you compare feature to feature and overall performance.
Sure, I've read the battery issues, but lithium ion problems aren't just isolated to Makita. I'm sure they are getting them ironed out, and offer extended warranties on defective batteries with 200 or less charging cycles (up from 150).
If your warranty station doesn't have this information, have them contact Makita.
Also make sure you charge your batteries every 3 months if you aren't using them on a regular basis, and don't drain them completely-the same for any lithium battery.
They have advantages, and disadvantages over the Nicad's, you can be the judge, but they are here to stay. Just be aware that they require different care then Nicad's, and you will be fine.

It's a good drill.

I mainly use if for going through concrete or CMU. It's good but not as powerful as my previous Porter-Cable.

It's a little lighter than the Porter-Cable I had been using, but not nearly as light as Makita's non-hammer drill version.

What it really has going for it is more convenient battery handling. Perhaps they have improved since my last model, but my Porter-Cable required two hands to remove the battery from the drill and from the charger (unless I wanted to permanently attach the charger to the wall).

I also like that the battery is the same as my Makita circular saw. It's great having only one recharger.

Last, but not least, it's very fast at recharging. I read a review that the battery technology is faulty, and that the batteries wouldn't last as long. I haven't owned this long enough to know whether that's a real concern.

I'm a cordless drill freak. I've had many in the past 20 years. This drill is the best.

The batteries last longer than any other drill I've owned, they recharge quickly, and they're surprisingly light-weight. The drill has excellent torque, and has no problem drilling dozens of 1-3/8" dia. center-bit cabinet door hinge pockets in oak without stalling, on a single charge. The chuck has a ball-bearing ratchet locking mechanism. It doesn't lose it's grip on your bits over time, and you positively know your bits are secure when you lock them in. The built-in LED light is handy (the chuck does sometimes block direct illumination of what you're drilling, however).

Makita has an excellent ergonomic design. The drill is balanced, and lighter than any other 18Vdc drill I've owned. It fits perfectly in my hands, and the rubber handle insets are nice and grippy.

You will love this drill. Take it from a drill freak.

I bought this particular model for my Son-in-Law so I haven't tried it personally. I have the same model only not a hammer drill and really like it. The batteries charge fast and hold a charge for a long time. Plenty of screw/drill power. This is my second Makita driver in the last 25 years and would purchase again.

This is my second one of these drills. I was completely satisfied with my first one, but the battery replacement was just about as much as a new drill, so I bought the entire drill, case, and batteries. They are light, plenty of power, and the batteries charge very fast.

Thus far, I'm very happy with this driver; it's a big step up from the ~10 year old 18 volt drive it was replacing, which probably has more to do with the current battery technology than anything else (although this also lighter has a smaller form factor which is also nice). The batteries provide a lot of power despite their small form factor and, best of all, charge in about 15 minutes. As a result of the good battery life and really fast charging, I've yet to run out juice on a project.

I bought this model in particular to get the hammer drill functionality along with the drilling/driving aspects. I didn't want to have to purchase a separate drill for the times I need to deal with masonry (those times are infrequent enough not to warrant a dedicated tool, but still frequent enough to want something that works better than a standard drill). The hammer drive function works well; it certainly is not as a good as a heavy-duty, corded rotary driver with a side-handle, but it can definitely handle drilling a few holes with relative ease.
