Precision Settings and Features for Quality Cuts
The SP6000K1 saw has a bevel capability of -1 degree to 48 degrees with positive stops at 22.5 degrees and 45 degrees. The saw delivers precise cutting, as the position of the blade enters the material on the same cutting line whether cutting straight or bevel. In addition, the saw has close-to-wall cutting capability (11/16 inch) for expanded cutting applications. The built-in depth stop allows a preliminary cut of 1/16 inch to be performed before the entire material is cut, creating clean and splinter-free cutting.

12 AMP Direct-Drive Power for Smooth Cutting
The SP6000K1 has a powerful 12 amp motor with soft start for smooth start-ups and Electronic Speed Control to maintain a constant speed under load for smooth cutting. The variable-speed dial control (2,000-5,200 rpm) allows the user to set the speed for optimum performance in a variety of materials. The built-in torque limiter helps prevent motor burnout.

Precision Cuts and Ease of Use
The saw includes a range of convenient features, including a large top handle and an electric brake for increased productivity. The saw also features a lock lever that attaches the saw to the rail system, so the saw stays on the anodized aluminum rail when positioned for a bevel cut. The smooth and convenient plunge-release lever is designed for operator comfort, and the depth adjustment with large scale is easy to set.

Best in Class for a Range of Applications
The SP6000K1 is engineered for cutting sheet material, finish work, trim work, and remodeling. It is ideal for a broad range of trades, including cabinet installers, cabinet manufacturers, finish carpenters, stair installers, flooring installers, woodworkers, and general contractors seeking a best-in-class 6-1/2-inch plunge circular saw. Meet my new baby June 4, 2010
I bought one of these without guide rail a couple months ago and it has been invaluable. I bought a Festool 55" rail to go with it, since they are compatible and Festool has more accessories (which would probably work on the Makita rails too). I built my own multi function table, including a Kreg flip-stop system. It makes a great little panel saw. I found that the dust bag from my Dewalt miter saw fits it and collects 80-90%; goodbye vacuum hose. Okay down to pros and cons.

Pros:
It is British-made (with a Japanese name??). It is very accurate; it even does well at skimming the edge of a board. It comes with a good blade. It comes in a teal systainer. It is powerful enough for everything I've thrown at it: plywood, hardwoods, etc. It has a little tab that extends into a slot in the Makita guide rail to keep the saw from tipping when you have it leaning over at 45 degrees (Festool rails do not have this slot).

Cons:
As others have said, the dust chute rotates too easily. Makita shows a nice rip fence in the manual, but I haven't found it available anywhere. The cord is only 6' long, though it hasn't been a problem. The depth scale is metric.

To sum up, it's an invaluable asset in a small cabinet shop or in the field, which can easily give the Festool a run for its money. The pros easily outweigh the cons.

Amazon Verified Purchase
I took some time to research the benefits of the various track saws and I chose the Makita SP6000K1 6-1/2-Inch Plunge Circular Saw with Guide Rail. I received the saw promptly and in excellent condition via two day shipping as is usual when ordering from Amazon Prime.

I was shocked by how smooth and quiet and powerful this saw is and I love the soft-start. It took a couple of cuts to get used to the plunging action, from then on smooth sawing. The fit and finish is real good and the little slider on the saw to lock it into the rail is the main feature that sold me on this saw over the DeWalt and the Festool. I went with the DEWALT DWS5026 TrackSaw Track Clamps because they are the pistol grip type like a Irwin clamp much easier to use for me rather than the screw type like the Festool or Makita. You really should use the clamps to insure a precise cut. I don't have the problem with the dust chute as others have cited, either Makita has fixed the problem or I got one that sticks in place by good luck.

The cons:
The cord is shorter than I would like. (No big deal where I do most of my cutting I have to use an extension cord anyway.)

Bottom Line:
This is a nice saw and the price is right! If you are looking for a track saw be sure to give this saw a good hard look it is awesome.

One Year Update: It has been almost a year that I have been using this saw and have had nary a problem (not any non-self-inflicted ones at least) so I still recommend that you get yourself one, and see the smile on your face when you see the beautiful cuts you get.

The Makita SP6000K1 is a great way to break down large sheets of plywood and make other long cuts in wood. I debated a long time if it could be good enough to justify the price vs. a circular saw and a straight edge. Having used it a few months, I can say it is worth the price and Amazon has the best price.

The saw is smooth, tracks straight and cuts with no chip out at all. You simply mark the cut line, line up the guide rail, and plunge the saw into the wood and push it through.

Dust collection when attached to a small shop vac is amazing. The dust port swivels too easily and gravity finds a way to put the hose in the wrong place, but it's a minor annoyance rather than a problem.

I purchased the clamps, which are cumbersome to use. And in the end, they probably aren't necessary. The track has nice foam pads on the bottom that eliminate slip.
