Beautiful jazz, mixed with a classical feel., December 28, 2003
This review is from: Mal 4 (Audio CD)
This is a trio album from 1958, but it doesn't feel quite like any other music that I know from that period. Of course it's close enough, but it has something unique about it. I think it comes from incorporating a bit of a classical music sensibility into jazz playing. Whatever the explanation, the piano playing on this album is beautiful. I especially recommend "J.M.'s Dream Doll." This album impressed me so much that I have gone on to buy other Mal Waldron albums, and a whole bunch of other things that have spun off from those purchases. This is not likely to show up on most people's "most important jazz album" but I actually like to listen to it more than to most other albums. I recommend it highly, especially if you like melodically-beautiful piano playing.
