Call-and-response kirtan accented by lap steel, sitar, horns and gypsy violin. 'Mala' (in Sanskrit, a string of beads, used like a rosary, to facillitate concentration on a mantra) has the same intentions as its predecessor, 'Japa', but the melodies and modes it explores reflect a deeper Eastern influence. Music and mantras for yoga with an incredible twist of Stringer's musical expertise. Produced by Saul David Raye, Dave sings vocal duets, quartets and ensembles with Carri Abrahms, Joni Allen, Liz Burnette, Donna de Lory, Jaik Grace, Sheila Nicholls, Danny Peck, Steve Ross, Shanti Shivani, Mark Smith, Suzanne Sterling, Allie Stringer and C.C. White. The backing band is subtle, concise, intuitive, fluid, funky: Girish Gambhira on tablas, James Harrah on electric guitar, Ian Walker on bass, and Jay Bellerose on drum set. Dave is one of the top two touring artists in this genre and one whose music crosses to several mainstream types of music. Featured also are Greg Ellis and Azam Ali from Vas, Hans Christian from Rasa, Suzanne Teng on flute, with Lionel Cole and Donna de Lory adding vocal support.
