Book Description

January 12, 2012
In Malamute Man: Memoirs of an Arctic Traveler, Joe Henderson, who came to Alaska in search of adventure, finds himself on a remarkable journey exploring the Arctic with his Alaskan malamute sled dog team. He ventures into one of the most brutal environments on earth where extreme subzero temperatures are a constant reminder of mortality, and the will to survive is unselfishly shared by both man and dog. Together, they must fend off charging grizzly bears, endure powerful blizzards, and suffer the horror of plunging through thin ice. Joe’s gripping tales of perseverance and his fearless, free-spirited dogs are both humorous and astonishing.

5.0 out of 5 stars 21st Century Explorer February 4, 2012
Format:Paperback
Joe Henderson grabs you right away with a life and death situation for him and his dogs with a grizzly bear. He recounts his local exploring as a young boy in Michigan, and then charts his path from there to Alaska. I've followed Joe online for years and always marveled at his exploits and his down-to-earth humbleness. He's down-to-earth straight forward in this book, and humble as well. His sense of "let's see what's out there" has driven him from boyhood to now. What he wants to see and explore is available to him via his 22 Alaskan Malamute team. What it takes to get there is mind boggling to me. But, he sets his sights and gets it done. Whether it's designing a tent that will stand him in good stead in -60 F, or designing a modified fan hitch for the dogs to pull the 3000lbs freight, he gets it done. The book recounts various encounters with wildlife (both hostile and non-hostile), harrowing situations on the expeditions, as well as my favorite - many stories about the individual malamutes. I've read many polar explorer books from over 100 years ago, always eager for the meager details they provided about the sled dogs. This book is not meager in details about the dogs! Some of the photos are similar to photos from over 100 years ago, but they're of 21st century malamutes, doing what they're bred to do and loving it, with a musher who respects the dogs, the land, and is unparalleled in what he's accomplished. A great read, leaving you wanting to know more about his continuing exploits!

5.0 out of 5 stars A real life, true adventure. February 16, 2012
By SW
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
A riveting read from start to finish. The story of one man following his dream to not only explore, but live off the land in one of the most unforgiving regions of North America. The only means of travel is by dog sled and he tells stories of stunning vistas, friendly and un-friendly wildlife and the trustworthy bond between himself and his team of Malamutes, often hundreds of miles and days travelling away from civilisation.
This is in the days before sat-navs, sat phones and all manner of safety gear. Then it was subsistence living and survival, one man with one team in one vast cold and bitter wilderness. Essential adventurous reading.

3.0 out of 5 stars pictures need help April 18, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
The book was an adventure I only dreamed of. Malamutes are distinctly unique as companions and working dogs. They will lead, work side by side but aren't good followers. Well told! I would have paid for better quality pictures. They are unique enough to have warranted glossy production.
