I got this book last week from cichlidpress and it is absolutely beautiful...the pictures are fantastic, the new information is great, and the new section on deep (deeper) water cichlids is also fantastic.

This book is a must for Malawi cichlid keepers... I highly recommend it... You won't find this kind of quality information elsewhere than from Ad Konings himself!

This text is a definite great read for anyone who loves Lake Malawi Cichlids, and who is interested in a comprehensive description of all the Species from that lake. The photos are gorgeous and of high quality, and I have used them to help identify species or confirm them. Lacking are photos of BOTH sexes, and the juveniles ("juvies"). However, this is indeed an excellent reference book, by the most famous author of African Cichlid books and articles. This book in combination with one of his others, Back to Nature: Malawi Cichlids (Revised & Expanded Edition)make a wonderful "combo" and probably should be sold together as in many ways they compliment each other. I have both and absolutely love them. I have many books on Malawi Cichlids, but these are my most used. A definite *****. Happy reading, and enjoy those fantastic fish, who bring their world into our aquaria, if we give them the right media and size aquaria. I hope Dr Konings will, in future writings, include some information re compatible Malawi Cichlids (in terms of color and temperament) and also other fish which may also be good co-habitants, e.g. synodontis catfish.

I can highly recommend this book to lovers of African Rift Lakes Cichlids.

It presents an extremely comprehensive range of pictures of all known Lake Malawi Cichlid Species and outlines the habitat, behaviour and diet of most of the cichlid populations in Lake Malawi.

Malawi Cichlids - In Their Natural Habitat is written from a evolutionary biological perspective and presents some interesting theories on the evolution of the Malawi Cichlids and can be heavy reading at times.

This book is for the serious enthusiast.

I'm very glad with this book, because if you are a malawi cichlid fan, this is your book; no other book can offer you such a big images bank of these beautiful fishes in their own habitat. Without a doubt, this book must be in all malawi fans library to know everything about the species, the feeding, behavior and breeding in the Nyassae lake of these fantastic organisms of our aquariums. This is not an aquarist guide, it's only about the original behavior in the original ecosystem of this animals so, if you expect some advices of maintans malawi cichlids, this is not the right book, but for me it was just what I want.

The best book on the subject in print. I have read the first three editions and they are also very good. It is not designed to be a book for the beginning aquarist but is extremely useful for the advanced aquarist.

For an avid hobbyist like myself, this is a must have for those who keep African cichlids. For those who are not, you might find the many color photos enjoyable. In reading the author's findings and comments, I find the sentence structure a little awkward. I am not certain, but it comes across as if English might be his second language. The data is thorough, however, on occasion I must reread a section to make certain I understood what the author was trying to convey as it seems a little choppy.

I would say the book reads like a school text book, which if that's what you're looking for, is not a bad thing at all. I have decided I will read the book all the way through, but because so much geography is referenced in the book, I will more than likely find more use out of the book as a reference for later when I want to look up a particular fish, etc. Much is still unknown about the species, which some readers might find difficult to grasp, but I would rather the author tell me something is yet to be determined than to draw a conclusion that might later be disproved. This author does the former.

The pictures are great and the book is made of a high quality that has the potential of lasting for many years. I do recommend this book, but thought you should know about it's structure since there don't seem to be any previews at this point in time.

I bought this for my partner & it has helped him to identify all his Malawis only problem is I'm now a Malawi widow lol

Excellent resource for anyone considering keeping a cichlid tank. A must have for anyone who already owns cichlids. Textbook quality information and outstanding photos.

An excellent big book about the cichlids of Lake Malawi, with hundreds of excellent colorful underwater photos and full of information about all the environments of the lake. If you are really interested in Malawi cichlids, you need this book, it is fascinating and beautiful. The 4th edition adds and updates, but the 2nd and 3rd edition are also excellent. Koning's really is passionate about learning about cichlids.
