Review
I must say that Amir Muhammad has stumbled upon a brilliant idea. Malaysians, in general, love simple books (preferably ones that require less reading and contain more illustrations). Combine that concept with the really weird things our politicians keep spouting out from day to day, and you have the basis of what I would consider THE definitive Malaysian Joke Book. The book is funny, well-executed and well worth getting. Looks pretty neat on your bookshelf too, so be sure to buy your own copy! --Ted Mahsun

Malaysia is screwed. And I thought politicians from the U.S. said dumb things. compiled and published by awesome Malaysian director Amir Muhammad (director of several banned films) and given to me for free when I met him at PIFF 08, these quotes are mostly hilarious and some of them are even absurd. I can't believe it! These are real people in the malaysian government and saying real things in public forums. I can't wait for volume 2! --Goodreads.com

The book is an excellent exercise in editorialising. Just by reproducing facts, dates and on-record utterances, Amir colours in a dreadful sketch of Malaysian politics: misogyny, racism, hypocrisy, an apathetic disregard for parliamentary duties (and, by extrapolation, democracy), and a plain lack of intelligence (since when has nutrition been a measure for media freedom?). These things worry at a reader as he or she goes through the pages, chuckling and sighing; the compiler has managed to critique almost every aspect of his topic -- without actually commenting on anything, himself. Why say something when your subject can say it for you? --Kakiseni.com
