Brass music that isn't overwhelmingly "brassy",

This review is from: Malcolm Arnold: The Complete Brass Chamber Music (Audio CD)
As is well known to even marginal Arnold fans, Sir Malcolm was a trumpeter by trade, so it shouldn't be surprising that he knows the nuances of the brass chior, and knows how to get the best from each member. While these are robust pieces, they don't blare and bray like so much brass music does. What does surprise however, is the delicacy and deftness of the writing--the Fantasy for Tuba Op. 102, the Brass Quintet No. 2--both written for the FAB are clear, concise and direct--Arnold means what he says and says what he means and is done! This is an excellent album for those who like late 20th century music; those who know Arnold's music only thru his larger works; or, for those just curious. I urge all music lovers to give Sir Malcolm Arnold's music a serious listening--he is an excellent introduction to later 20th century music.
