A film long overdue for affordable release!!,

'Malcolm' is an hilarious film, which got very-little play in 1986 when first released. Then, ever after, videotapes were only available at outlandish prices. This long-overdue DVD release is most welcome. 'Malcolm' is a quirky and ultimately-loveable film. Now that it's available on DVD, I say 'buy it!'.

I have fond memories of seeing this 1986 Australian film on HBO/Showtime in the late 1980s. Inventive, touching, funny. If it ever becomes available in a format playable in North America, snap it up. Check the Internet Movie Database for more info.

"Malcolm" is a charming, sweet and very funny film about a 'slow' young man who happens to be a brilliant gadget maker. After unjustly losing his job he takes in a male/female couple to make ends meet: The guy is a stupid petty thief and his girlfriend is a smart, good-hearted woman who takes care of Malcom's best interests. The couple plan a daring bank heist with the aid of Malcolm's ingenious gadgets, which are hilarious and inventive. Sit back and let the film charm you.

Brilliant, funny, humerous. One of the best movies I ever saw. No nudity, violence or foul language. The audience I saw it with during the Seattle Film Festival in 1986, didn't move once the lights were turned on. We were all stunned at how wonderful this movie is.

I am heartened to see such enthusiastic reviews of this little Australian release. I am a proud Melbournian and count myself lucky to live in this wonderfully multicultural city - the food, festival and arts hub of Australia - and saw Malcolm on its initial release. Australians are fans of this big-hearted film and it performed very well down under at a time when our film industry was producing pitch-perfect comedies (check out other titles like The Big Steal, Muriel's Wedding, Love and Other Catastrophes, The Castle, Young Einstein, The Sum of Us, and Crackerjack). Despite our industry's efforts to repeat this remarkable period of larrikin comedy filmmaking that began in the 70s, these days our comedies are really quite tepid and draw too few audiences, perhaps because the old larrikin identity (Crocodile Dundee and his ilk) seems outmoded, or perhaps because filmmakers have lost touch with the nation's sense of humour. I can only speculate. Malcolm is not only a terrific comedy, it's a love letter to a bygone Melbourne that explores both the back streets and boulevards of this beautiful town. The early 90s saw the inner city invaded by the middle-class and gentrified, the old green rattler trams (streetcars) have since been retired and replaced by sleek grey European glass and steal, and the skyline is much higher and more crowded, but still recognisable, so Malcolm stands as an important lyrical time capsule for this vibrant garden city.

This movie is fun! Hard to find - we bought on good old VHS and get out sometimes - like when newer or stupider movies let us down.
Very quirky and enjoyable! What's more, there's nothing offensive about it. Highly recommended!

I can tell you personaly that my memmories of this movie include mainly the part where he splits the car in half and it becomes two seperate street vehicals. The thing is I have google to thank for me being able to search for a movie including a spliting car. If this was like roger rabbit movies I think this one can be used for baby sitting for sure, it's that good! Don't put this tape in a microwave oven, it will self disctruct and make a mess. Okee Okee, Okey Dokey, Ok bye.
