Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Hillier opts for an inclusive definition of herbs, so the peeling bark of a silver birch tree and the fuzzy flowers of a tender mimosa qualify, along with roses and basil, bittersweet and bee balm. This profusely illustrated guide to growing herbs is in many ways a wish book for gardeners. Ornamental qualities are highlighted in beautiful color photographs showing plant combinations of exceptional color, texture, or form. Since there is no mention of zone hardiness, it may well take further research to determine whether a plant is appropriate for a specific region, but "decorative" is the key word in Hillier's manual. Practical horticultural concerns are addressed in brief "gardener's notes," and there is a plant directory. The overall arrangement is visually appealing. Alice Joyce

5.0 out of 5 stars This herb gardening book is a must-have!, April 2, 2000
This review is from: Malcolm Hillier's Herb Garden (Hardcover)
This book is honestly my favorite gardening book - and I have quite a library! It includes basic information on both medicinal and culinary herbs, but what makes this book truly valuable is the information and advice it provides on artfully combining colors and textures. Malcom does an excellent job of combining beauty with herbal functionality. This book is overflowing with beautiful photos of plants combined in various themes, reflecting a variety of seasons and plant types. I've used several of the book's ideas to turn my garden into something really special! I highly recommend this book to every gardener!
