Book Description

Hapax March 31, 2010
"Today," declares svengali-at-large Malcolm McLaren, "there are two words that sum up the culture: 'authenticity' is one, and the other 'karaoke'! Many artists spend their entire life trying to authenticate, make true, a karaoke culture-but you have to be a magician to make that happen." This book, like the exhibition from which it stems, is built around McLaren's Shallow, a series of 21 "musical paintings" made from a "grab bag of pop culture's debris over the past 50 years." The project, curated by Bernd Wurlitzer, brought together music-related works by Delia Brown, Wolfgang Flad, Rodney Graham, Gregor Hildebrandt, Damien Hirst, Alicja Kwade, Jim Lambie, Jack Pierson, Rob Pruitt, Michael Queenland, Anselm Reyle, Michael Sailstorfer and Andreas Schulze. McLaren has proven to be a visionary of pop culture and a pop cultural icon for more than 30 years; with Shallow, he formally announces his identity as an artist.

3.0 out of 5 stars Wait for the DVD if it ever appears, July 28, 2010
This review is from: Malcolm McLaren: Musical Paintings (Hapax) (Paperback)
"Shallow" was McLaren's late hypnotic, absurd, and simply terrific music/video exhibition. It was made up of generally non-explicit moments from faded, B-level, "dirty movies" in close up or slow motion, and repeated until you felt yourself in a trance--faces leering mysteriously, someone walking down stairs, one actor drifting toward another, someone vacuuming suggestively (!) The sound track was, at times, quite clever: I recall the Betty Boop version of "I wanna be loved by you" woven together with Mick Jagger and the Stones' early hit "I just wanna make love to you." Over and over and over, but that was part of the dreamy effect. The book, which I flicked through at the book display, left me cold. It added very little, though to be fair, I didn't sit down with it for very long, or flick through it repetitively! Still, I wanted to like it, but just couldn't. If a DVD ever comes out, that's what I'll spring for. Goodbye Malcolm. You were a lively one.
