This salt is seriously fantastic. Lots of folks say there isn't a difference in taste from salt to salt. IMO, not true. Natural salt has minerals going for it that may make it milder than old fashioned sodium chloride. I'm sure all this can be debated.

This Maldon (aka English Sea Salt) is super chunky and crunchy. It's milder than normal salt, IMO and tastes great on just about everything. Also, "milder" doesn't mean "add more salt". I like to use this as a finishing salt to add a flavorful crunch to pan fried asparagus with black pepper and garlic, or sprinkle lightly on meats just before serving. Also is perfect for a coarse, dry herb rub for chicken.

Summary:
- This salt is delicious. It's exactly what common table salt is not: it's flaky, crunchy, mildly salty and delicious. I purchased this salt to be used for seasoning (before and during cooking) and especially for after, as a finishing salt.

Pros:
- Flaky, crunchy and sticks to food
- Not TOO salty tasting
- Great natural flavor
- Perfect "finishing" salt

Cons:
- I wish this salt came with a free classic Fiat or maybe a few Victoria's Secret supermodels, but it arrived by itself as just salt in a box
- I wish they made Sea Pepper too
- That last one was a joke; however, the free car and supermodels was not a joke. That was very serious.

Man I love this salt. I swear even compared to other premium sea salts there's something special about this stuff. I have been using it exclusively for a year or so now and have even given it as a gift along with good peppercorns and olive oil and my friends that aren't foodies were really surprised at what a difference good salt makes.

Not that this matters but I see this salt being used on Iron Chef America frequently.

Maldon is my #1 salt for anything needing a noticeable crystal.
As you can see (more photos in the picture section), the crystals are large enough to give sparkle while avoiding the classic opaque pretzel salt look. And the taste is much cleaner than pretzel salt. This salt sparkles in EVERY way!

Maldon is perfect to top breads...before baking, brush with beaten egg and sprinkle some on, adding sesame, poppy, onion, or any savory thing you like.
But it doesn't stop there.
Make your favorite cookie without salting the dough. I'm showing an almond cookie, but my fave is my lavender or rosemary cookies. Before baking, brush with egg or cream, sprinkle and bake.
I bake a LOT, and love this stuff. Feel free to comment if you like this review and want a recipe or tip.

There are many different varieties of sea salt out there. What makes Maldon unique is its large, pyramidal flakes. Some people use it for general cooking, but it really shines best as a finishing salt. That means cook with less salt, but sprinkle salt on the finished dish. You really get a chance to experience the unique characteristics (primarily texture) of each salt that way, and Maldon has a light crunch that I find very pleasant.

Some people claim to be able to taste the difference between salts, but as long as there are no additives, I find all sea salts taste the same. The pleasant texture and relatively reasonable cost make Maldon an excellent choice.

Regardless of whether or not you buy this salt, try tasting a standard table salt next to a sea salt. The iodine and anti-caking agents have a distinct and unpleasant bitterness. If you're not willing to get spendy on sea salt, at least find a salt with no additives, something like Diamond Crystal Kosher salt.

Slate Magazine has a review on table salts and this was the winner. So I ordered some from Amazon and compared it myself to the brands available where I live, including Celtic Sea Salt. There is no comparison... Maldon is the standout winner. It is big flaky, crunchy pieces of very tasty salt. This is not a baking salt. It is more of a finishing salt to go "on" foods. It's wonderful on avocado, steamed yellow squash, baked potatoes... etc. The Slate reviewer said he loved it the best on chocolate Häagen-Dazs ice cream! It's that good.

I love this salt!

And for the reviewers concerned about it not melting quickly... it's not supposed to. It's a FINISHING salt. It's a complete waste to cook with it, plus it's hard to come up with equivalent measures if you were to use it when cooking in place of kosher or table salt. But sprinkled on a rib eye fresh off the grill, on a pan seared salmon filet just before you serve it, on roasted aspargus right out of the oven, or even over a fresh, crisp apple half - it's "Na" heaven! If you already use finishing salts, you know what difference they can make. And if you're not, it's an easy way to take your dishes to the next level. Bon appetite!
