Editorial Reviews

Explore the untold story of Disney's most iconic villain in this wickedly fun twist on the classic SLEEPING BEAUTY. In an unforgiving mood after a neighboring kingdom threatens her forest, Maleficent (Angelina Jolie) places an irrevocable curse on the king's newborn daughter, the Princess Aurora. but as the child grows, Maleficent finds herself becoming fond of the girl. And as the conflict between the two realms intensifies, Maleficent realizes that Aurora may hold the key to peace in the land. Journey beyond the fairy tale in this soaring adventure that is "visually arresting, brilliantly designed" (Andrew Barker, Variety).

Maleficent is a remake of the Disney classic "Sleeping Beauty." I assumed that I knew what it was going to be about but, it turned out to be a totally unpredictable and amazing movie. Maleficent is about a betrayed fairy (Angelina Jolie) that curses the king's infant daughter Aurora as revenge. She soon discovers that when Aurora grows up, she is the only one who can restore the peace and happiness that everyone needs to get them out of the depression caused by revenge and war. This movie takes "Sleeping Beauty" and turns it into a completely different movie.

By far, this is the best Disney movie I've seen and one of the best movies I’ve seen in a while. Everything is just right. For example, the music sets the right mood in every scene. It is strong and loud when it needs to be and quite and shy at other times and, at certain points, it is playful and happy. It really pulls the whole movie together. Along with the jaw-dropping music, this movie has amazing actors starting with Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning (Auora). They fit each role perfectly almost as if they were born for these roles.

This movie is very interesting to watch because it isn’t entirely based on "Sleeping Beauty" so you get to see a completely different side of Maleficent before she becomes the villain that she is known as. Throughout the movie I found myself wanting the movie to go quicker to see what would happen next but not wanting it to end anytime soon. I think that the director Robert Stromberg and the writers Linda Woolverton and Charles Perrault really outdo themselves with this movie because I cannot stop obsessing about how great it is.

I give this movie 5 out of 5 perfect stars and recommend it for ages 9 to 18. To be honest, this movie is a movie that you should be sure not to miss because IT IS THAT GOOD!

This movie was absolutely fantastic and a "must see" in my opinion. Realize, it is not a child's movie. I give it a 5 star plus, plus, plus. The movie was magnificent in story line, acting, and computer graphic imaging (CGI). Although it follows the basic Disney storyline that we saw as children, it has a few slightly different twists as it takes a full 360 degree approach. It is a storyline that is about both Malificent (M) and Aurora (A) (aka Sleeping Beauty).

The movie begins with M. as a young girl, a fairy, to be precise. She is pretty, precious, sweet and loved by all. So...what happened to turn her into a meanie? That's what this storyline explains. You get to see what hardened her heart to cause her to curse baby A. Whether you agree or not, you will understand why M. was so terribly hurt and angry. You will also learn that M. has human feelings beyond her awesome magical powers, feelings just like you and I. Angelina Jolie was super A + + + in her role as M.; I don't think anyone could have done a better job. The CGI was fantastic, and the 3D added even more to an already awesome movie. The story had strong embedded messages about the evils of hatred and the power of love. The ending was also wonderful! This movie was a winner all around and I am anxious to watch it again. I will buy the video when it becomes available but I might actually even go back to the theater soon to see it there again. It was that good.

Parents with Children:
I certainly do not intend to tell anyone what to do, but my suggestion is to avoid taking children under about age 8 to see this movie until you see it first.

If I could return this, I would (I purchased this through Amazon HD'). This is not what was shown in theaters, but what was cut for probably 'Prime time'. For the reviewers that said it was horrible, I quite agree. In the THEATER VERSION: when Aurora was trying to pass through the wall of thorns, some of the king's soldiers see her, and eyes her as a 'village girl; they confront Aurora (of course not knowing she is the princess) Diaval warns Maleficent of this and Maleficent destroys the soldiers and brings Aurora safely to her; AMAZON VIDEO, everything up to the soldiers eyeing Aurora, and commenting she's a 'village girl'; the next scene all hell breaks loose and the soldiers are attacked, since you didn't see the original version, your first question is 'why are they being attacked, they weren't doing anything??' THEATER VERSION; when Maleficent and Diaval is taking Prince Phillip through the 'Iron wall' this is when Diaval discovers that Maleficent is harmed by iron and you can see that he feels for her, when they get to the castle they have a bad time getting in, when they enter Maleficent needs to put several guards 'to sleep'. That is how the guards know that Maleficent is in the castle, to which they inform the King; AMAZON VIDEO; going through the 'iron wall' Maleficent is burned a couple of times, next scene, Maleficent, Diaval, and the floating Prince are outside Aurora bed chambers(????) how did they get into the castle, never shown on this VIDEO. And I could go on, but why?
When one of my co-workers told me that his family had watched this on cable, I asked which version, when I told him what version I purchased from Amazon, he couldn't believe it, and agreed with me that this version is mainly for the TV and not what you would see at the theaters.
I'm not only disappointed in Amazon but also in Disney, to think that they could pass this off as the original movie version. Shame.

Where is the 3D release?
They're releasing a region "B" (UK) 3D blu-ray - but nobody knows if its going to be locked to just region "B" or will actually be region free. Some people insist that version will be region free, but the only way to know for sure is to wait and see. Fortunately, waiting to... Read More

Why not 3D
I wrote Disney Customer service a couple of months ago and they said they had no plans to release a 3D version in the US, even though they released the 3D version in Korea months ago, and I bought a region free version from Germany that works fine in my 3D Blu-Ray player just fine and today they... Read More
