Explore the untold story of Disney's most iconic villain in this wickedly fun twist on the classic SLEEPING BEAUTY. In an unforgiving mood after a neighboring kingdom threatens her forest, Maleficent (Angelina Jolie) places an irrevocable curse on the king's newborn daughter, the Princess Aurora. but as the child grows, Maleficent finds herself becoming fond of the girl. And as the conflict between the two realms intensifies, Maleficent realizes that Aurora may hold the key to peace in the land. Journey beyond the fairy tale in this soaring adventure that is "visually arresting, brilliantly designed" (Andrew Barker, Variety).

Maleficent is a remake of the Disney classic "Sleeping Beauty." I assumed that I knew what it was going to be about but, it turned out to be a totally unpredictable and amazing movie. Maleficent is about a betrayed fairy (Angelina Jolie) that curses the king's infant daughter Aurora as revenge. She soon discovers that when Aurora grows up, she is the only one who can restore the peace and happiness that everyone needs to get them out of the depression caused by revenge and war. This movie takes "Sleeping Beauty" and turns it into a completely different movie.

By far, this is the best Disney movie I've seen and one of the best movies I’ve seen in a while. Everything is just right. For example, the music sets the right mood in every scene. It is strong and loud when it needs to be and quite and shy at other times and, at certain points, it is playful and happy. It really pulls the whole movie together. Along with the jaw-dropping music, this movie has amazing actors starting with Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning (Auora). They fit each role perfectly almost as if they were born for these roles.

This movie is very interesting to watch because it isn’t entirely based on "Sleeping Beauty" so you get to see a completely different side of Maleficent before she becomes the villain that she is known as. Throughout the movie I found myself wanting the movie to go quicker to see what would happen next but not wanting it to end anytime soon. I think that the director Robert Stromberg and the writers Linda Woolverton and Charles Perrault really outdo themselves with this movie because I cannot stop obsessing about how great it is.

I give this movie 5 out of 5 perfect stars and recommend it for ages 9 to 18. To be honest, this movie is a movie that you should be sure not to miss because IT IS THAT GOOD!

5.0 out of 5 stars Magnificent Malificent !!! June 5, 2014
This movie was absolutely fantastic and a "must see" in my opinion. Realize, it is not a child's movie. I give it a 5 star plus, plus, plus. The movie was magnificent in story line, acting, and computer graphic imaging (CGI). Although it follows the basic Disney storyline that we saw as children, it has a few slightly different twists as it takes a full 360 degree approach. It is a storyline that is about both Malificent (M) and Aurora (A) (aka Sleeping Beauty).

The movie begins with M. as a young girl, a fairy, to be precise. She is pretty, precious, sweet and loved by all. So...what happened to turn her into a meanie? That's what this storyline explains. You get to see what hardened her heart to cause her to curse baby A. Whether you agree or not, you will understand why M. was so terribly hurt and angry. You will also learn that M. has human feelings beyond her awesome magical powers, feelings just like you and I. Angelina Jolie was super A + + + in her role as M.; I don't think anyone could have done a better job. The CGI was fantastic, and the 3D added even more to an already awesome movie. The story had strong embedded messages about the evils of hatred and the power of love. The ending was also wonderful! This movie was a winner all around and I am anxious to watch it again. I will buy the video when it becomes available but I might actually even go back to the theater soon to see it there again. It was that good.

Parents with Children:
I certainly do not intend to tell anyone what to do, but my suggestion is to avoid taking children under about age 8 to see this movie until you see it first.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rewriting 'Evil' September 13, 2014
I've heard people complaining about the fact that, in this movie, the character Maleficent has 'lost her way', that it's a poor attempt to make an evil character sympathetic. 'Well, well'... times have changed. I don't think this is about making her 'good', but instead, it's about telling a story from a different, non-canonic perspective, so that we can have a better understanding of the whole. Isn't that what life is like? There isn't such a thing as a single truth, a single reality; we need multiple ones in order to understand the whole. I see this movie this way.
I don't think labelling the character as 'good' or 'evil' is particularly productive... it's a flawed character, yes. Who isn't? Aren't we done with traditional good ole heroes? They're not actually appealing to me. What is good and what is evil anyway? Depends on who's speaking.
This movie was way more than I expected.... I'm glad to have seen it and I'll definitely add it to my collection.

I thought Maleficent was a brilliant retelling. I’m a huge fairy tale lover and am especially fond of twisted tales.

Honestly I didn’t think it would be possible to fall in love with Maleficent but I was proven wrong. I loved her!!

There is not one thing I can think of that I would change in this movie. By the end I was totally happy with how things played out.

My favorite character was Maleficent’s sidekick Diaval played by Sam Riley. In fact I think I would have been perfectly content if Aurora fell in love with him.

As far as age appropriateness… my friend took her three year old Disney princess loving daughter to it and they ended up in having to leave. She said it wasn’t scary at all but just boring, here is what she said -

"At the end of Maleficent sitting OUTSIDE of it waiting for it to be over. My daughter was bored out of her mind and would not behave. First time she’s ever done that in a movie."

My daughter is 8 and I think she will love it. I would think maybe by age 6 this would work for most kids.

Now for my 19 year old son’s reaction… he thought it was a good movie but wasn’t thrilled that the story-line had been changed. He never has been a fan of any kind of change so that doesn’t really surprise me. I can’t really say why without spoiling the movie but it was very similar to his reaction to Frozen. He is a big believer in true loves kiss breaking spells. “The boy should kiss the girl and they should all live happily ever after.” And although this movie of course had a true loves kiss it had a twist to it.

My recommendation – See this one.
