Editorial Reviews

All-new soundtrack that includes a new take on the original Disney classic, Once Upon a Dream, performed by Lana Del Rey. Original score composed by 8-time Academy Award nominee, James Newton Howard. The official soundtrack to the Walt Disney Studios film Maleficent, starring Angelina Jolie. This visually dazzling live action film explores the origins of one of the most iconic Disney villains: Maleficent, the infamous fairy who curses Princess Aurora in Disney's animated classic Sleeping Beauty. This 'origin' story is told from Maleficent's perspective, intersecting with the classic in both familiar and unexpected ways. The movie stars Academy Award-winning actress Angelina Jolie as Maleficent, and is directed by two-time Oscar-winning production designer Robert Stromberg (Avatar, Alice in Wonderland). The film co-stars Elle Fanning (Super 8) as the Princess Aurora, and features Sharlto Copley (District 9), Imelda Staunton (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix), and Juno Temple (Atonement).

Wow!

When I found out James Newton Howard was scoring Disney’s new movie, “Maleficent”, I figured it could go one of two ways with him…James Newton Howard has created some of my favorite film scores – but a lot of those have been a number of years ago, and much of his later work has been adequate but uninspiring on its own…I hoped this score would be able to stand with the likes of his “Treasure Planet”, “Dinosaur”, “Hidalgo”, or “Signs”…I hoped the generic action fluff music without much substance would be avoided which, unfortunately has come from him in recent years far too often in several movies that he’s scored…

As I started listening through soundtrack samples online before the album became available for purchase, I quickly discovered that the soundtrack to “Maleficent” would be something special – I remember remarking to some of my family members something to this effect, “It sounds like James Newton Howard is back with his old, familiar magic; I hope so.”

I am so pleased with the soundtrack – this is big, stirring, powerful, epic music on a vast orchestral scale; now, that said, there are still plenty of intimate moments where things are close and soft, but when James Newton Howard needs to let loose the full force of the orchestra he does so, and the results are fantastic!

“Maleficent” stands comfortably with the best scores James Newton Howard has ever written, and I do not make that statement lightly or forget the high company Mr. Howard has set up for himself to keep over the years.

I can tell you this: If the movie is half as good as the music then it will be excellent, because the music is beautiful, stirring, thematically-driven, and almost entirely orchestral (with some synth effects from time to time to augment that texture).

5.0 out of 5 stars An outstanding listening experience May 28, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
It's true that I haven't seen the movie and I can't comment on how the score enhances the film. However, listening to this score from beginning to end is an absolute joy. It's dark at times, whimsical at others, lush and beautiful in spots and downright creepy in other moments. (Lana Del Rey's version of "Once Upon a Dream" is a perfect fit for the score). The spectrum is run from one end to the other and James Newton Howard has repeated the glorious variety found in other scores he's composed: The Last AirBender comes to mind. (And completely unlike his worst score, The Green Lantern). The instrumentation is very interesting with some unexpectedly glorious tuba work in the opening suite. Tuba? Yes, really! and it's an amazing performance by whomever played the tuba in the recording. This is not a predictable score and if you're a fan of film scores, this is a must-have. It's perhaps the best score of the year. After being so disappointed with "Cap America: Winter Soldier", the score for "Maleficent" makes me very happy. Recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Storybook music at it's finest! June 2, 2014
By Danny

James Newton Howard is no stranger to writing music for some pretty big films. I have quite a few of his scores and of those my personal favorites have been "Waterworld", "Falling Down", "The Man in the Moon", and "Dinosaur". This, in my opinion, is probably one of Howard's greatest scores yet. It certainly stands out from all of the others because I think this particular work captures thematically what the movie handles visually. It is the goal of all film composers, but sometimes they aren't so successful at it. Howard simply has some great movements here in this score and he does it so well that if there never was a "Maleficent" movie, the score could stand on it's own to tell the story.
Howard incorporates some really nice storybook musical devices here. Sparkling chimes, bouncy playful rhythms, innocent solo flutes/clarinets, sinister underlying themes that creep up under all the happy, and some really emotional pieces that you know suck those tears out of the audience's eyeballs! I haven't seen the movie but upon hearing cues like "True Loves Kiss"...you better bring your box of tissues.
You have everything you need for a good fairy tale here. Track 2 has your "storybook choral voices" that paints the magic of the scene. Track 3, "Maleficent Flies" has a single haunting vocal solo that grows into a bigger choral arrangement that you can close your eyes and get a sense of someone flying through the night sky high in the clouds. There is plenty of action and spell casting cues here too. "Battle of the Moors", "The Spindle's Room", and "Path of Destruction" has some pretty thunderous orchestral power behind them. The bass is intense on these!

5.0 out of 5 stars Magni-Male-ficent June 11, 2014
Format:Audio CD
Walt Disney’s 1959 animated version of Charles Perrault’s classic 15th century fairy tale Sleeping Beauty is rightly considered a classic of children’s literature and cinema. In it, a beautiful princess is cursed by a wicked witch to prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and fall into a deep, death-like sleep, from which she can only be awakened by true love’s kiss. It’s a timeless tale, the basis of many fables, but in Disney’s new film Maleficent things turn on their head: it tells essentially the same story, but from the point of view from the “evil witch”. In this version, Maleficent (Angelina Jolie) is not truly evil, but instead a fairy from an enchanted world known as The Moors, who was betrayed and mutilated by her human lover. Vowing revenge on those who harmed her and her kind, Maleficent does indeed curse Aurora (Elle Fanning), the daughter of King Stefan (Sharlto Copley), but immediately regrets her actions; with the help of her minion Diaval (Sam Riley), Maleficent tries to protect Aurora throughout her childhood, while Stefan’s forces attempt to invade and destroy The Moors. The visually sumptuous film was directed by Robert Stromberg (the Oscar winning production designer of Avatar), and features a dazzling score by composer James Newton Howard.

That Maleficent has a large, fully-orchestral fantasy score should not come as a surprise, as Robert Stromberg is the brother of composer/conductor William Stromberg, whose outstanding re-recordings of classic film scores with the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra on the Tribute Film Classics label have been staples of the soundtrack community for years. What is surprising is that the score should be this good.
