Singer/Rapper Mali Music is 26 year old Kortney Jamaal Pollard and "Mali Is..." is his major label debut. Coming from a Gospel background, his lyrics are positive or Biblical, while musically, he's a blend of old Soul to modern R&B, much like Marvin Gaye meeting Drake or Frank Ocean. Opening cut "No Fun Alone" recalls Gaye, while the woozy "Ready Aim" or "Fight For You" sound more modern a la Ocean.

"Beautiful" is a soulful ballad with tight harmonies, while the jerky upbeat "Heavy Love" has aptly thundering beats. "Walking Shoes" is a beautiful melancholic ballad about perseverance with shades of Bob Marley. The beautiful "One" is Reggae, while the Reggae-tinged "Make It" finds him rapping about trying to make it into Heaven.

"Little Lady" is a lovely piano-sprinkled ballad with a hesitant-sounding beat and sung/rapped lyrics. The midtempo "Royalty" asks "Do you know who you are?... Kings and Queens". "Johnny & Donna" is a piano ballad recalling John Legend, and closing is "I Believe" which takes a look at the sad state of the world; wars, genocide, no faith, no trust, and he declares "I'm just one of them old people God's got a hold on... I believe" against gently trilling guitars.

A soulful croon, positive lyrics, and an eclectic sonic palate, all makes for a winning debut.

Given Mali's announcement that his next musical project would not be a "gospel" CD, I was a little hesitant to make the purchase. It is true, Mali does not mention the name of Jesus, something very present in previous offerings, yet, I still hear his Christian foundation shine through. I do hope he realizes that much of his "fame" came because there are Christians who want to hear a "new song" with pure gospel beat, flavor, and message. Along with biblical references, Mali appears to stay true to his Christian roots.

Let me begin the album review of Mali Is...(RCA) with this unabashed admission on my part. I'm a self-confessed Mali Music fan. His music, his lyrics speak so loudly and profoundly to my psyche and spirit, I'm simply left speechless by the poetic prose, the musical mastery and the vocal veracity.

You see Mali occupies an exclusive space in my heart for artists that speak, sing and write the language of artistry. Since Mali's arrival on the public stage with his groundbreaking independent release - The 2econd Coming - Mali has offered up a menu of music that's more foreign that familiar in taste and tone. Words are frequently allegorical. Music is almost always ecclectic. Yet, the final product you hear is so appetizing and so refreshing to so many, one can't help but conclude that Mali Music is a rare breed to be enjoyed in measured doses.

Whatever your conclusion, Mali's popularity has noticeably bulldozed beyond the walls of the church and into some new frontiers, where ministry is rarely heard. By my perspective, Mali's influence on artistry and ministry is so huge, he's a game changer. Look closely. The paradigm has shifted, the template has been tweaked and the bar has been raised with regards to the intersection between artistry and ministry. Enough with the accolades. Here's my take on the album, Mali Is...

No Fun Alone is a slow and steady Mali groove with MM pouring his heart out with poetic perfection, on the happiness and heaviness that comes with stardom. On Ready Aim, Mali gets metaphorical with his listeners on a track that's heavy with beats and base and a stinging guitar. What exactly Mali Music is talking about isn't clear to me, which can be a little disconcerting but the music keeps you enthralled.

I have never written a CD review but I was compelled to write this one. The CD is EXCELLENT!!! I have played it at least 3 times a day since I purchased it. Mali stayed true to his distinctive sound and most importantly who he is as a person. I highly recommend it!

I am close to the owner of DMG Records that Mali was part of. When DMG signed him I was blown away by his gift and creativity. When Akon saw Mali and he left DMG I knew he would finally be on the right path to success. After a few year of silence I see Mali on American Idol as the the guest performing artist... I was so happy that the secret was out the bag for the world to see!

This album had me find somewhere to drive as i listened to it in its entirety.

I look forward to what will come from this amazing talent!

Checkout his other albums especially "2econd Coming"

Ok, so since it took SOOOO long for this one to come out, I thought I had heard all the songs and I would buy it for support, I love Mali Music...Well, I am so glad I did. I was thinking I would be disappointment because I love when he was strictly gospel...He just just impressed me. I have travel music this summer!!! Awesome!
