Misery Signals - Of Malice & The Magnum Heart
Purchasing an album out of instinct can
be a very good thing, and usually Ferret Music puts out
decent bands, and this one falls into that catergory.
The album is produced by Devin Townsend, who has
produced quite a few very respectable albums, and this
band features members of 7 Angels 7...

Were members of renowned hardcore outfit 7 Angels 7 Plagues and are now current members in this outstanding modern hardcore act. Of Malice and the Magnum Heart is Misery Signals first major release and god damn its good. This group heavily tours all corners of the world, so you can probably look for them at Warped Tour this year. Devin Townsend, lead singer for Strapping Young Lad shows off his skills as a producer with this album, he also does backing vocals on the track "a Victim, a Target." If you are a fan of 7 Angels 7 Plagues, Poison the Well, or Skycamefalling you probably already know who these guys are, but if you don't, then you should really consider checking this out.

5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing debut album, March 17, 2005

After seeing the video for The Year Summer Ended in June, I was surprised at good it sounded. So anyway I decided to go pick up this cd but I didn't have the highest expectations for it, thinking that it was probably more of the same tired hardcore/metalcore stuff that most bands in those genres keep making today. Boy was I wrong, this is one of those cds where the band knows how to create the perfect balance between the heavy moments and the emotional breakdowns. Every song is great and I especially liked the quieter track Worlds & Dreams. Anyways, go do yourself a favor and get this cd if your into the metalcore/hardcore scene.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, March 4, 2005
This review is from: Of Malice & The Magnum Heart (Audio CD)
This album is terrific. Every single aspect of it, from the guitar work to the drumming and vocals, is sheer perfection. This band is one of the few new hardcore bands that can cater to many different types of heavy music fans and maintain their musical integrity and musicianship at the same time. The polarity of this album is excellent and well executed; some moments of this album make you want to cry and some parts make you wanna break a few noses. I highly suggest picking up this album if you're a fan of emotional hardcore such as 7 Angels 7 Plagues, Poison the Well, SkyCameFalling etc. Standout tracks include: The Year Summer Ended in June, The Stinging Rain, Worlds and Dreams, and Five Years.

5.0 out of 5 stars amazing in every aspect, July 7, 2005

this band has so much talent not just in the way they play but the way they write and organize their music. awesome guitar playingwith some brutal breakdowns, and their singer sceam every word with such passion that it can just overwhelm you especially on the eyar summer ended in june, you can tell he isvery passionate about his music and what he is writing about. this band should be so much more popular then they are. they remind me of scars of tomorrow but heavier some pats more melodic in others. the last track on this cd comes completely out of left field but it is so amazing i kinda wish theyd realease a whole album of material like that sometime in the future but then again it might creat a huge backlash but i found it very enjoyable and moving to listen to. amazing record best hardcore cd in a long long time.

4.0 out of 5 stars High's and Lows., June 3, 2004

This full length from Misery Signals has lived up to my expectations, but I feel it is way overproduced (like most modern music). The Stinging Rain is a highlight on the CD showcasing the abilities of M.S. to make good ol' melodic hardcore.Five Years and the Day Summer Ended in June are also good tracks to checkout.World's and Dreams has some nifty guitar work and cool sounding synth effects. All in all, I feel like Misery Signals has done a great job exhibiting how much they have grown as a band and musically on this CD.Some of their older stuff is just classic though and always will be.I feel that the 7 Angels 7 Plagues style has definatley come out in some songs on the CD.World's and Dreams is quite reminiscent of Jhazymne's Lullaby or Dandelions. In the end,I highly reccomend this CD for diehard M.S. fans such as I,or even newcomers to the melodic hardcore genre.Misery Signals is definatley at the top of their game.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great band, no reason to buy the import though, March 31, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is an amazing band and one of my favorite CDs ever written. All of the musicians are able to convey exactly what they are feeling through their instruments from the drums in back straight through to the vocals in front.

Buy this cd... but don't buy the import unless you are a collector. No extra tracks. The music video for The Year Summer Ended In June is included on the cd but at a very low quality, not much better than you'd get on youtube for free.

5.0 out of 5 stars From tragedy comes triumph, August 7, 2006
This review is from: Of Malice & The Magnum Heart (Audio CD)
"Of Malice & The Magnum Heart" is basically a farewell to two friends of the band who died in a horrific car accident. Throughout this entire album, you can feel the hurt, pain, and anger of the days following the tragedy. A very good album, and one that needs to be listened to by anyone who has ever lost loved ones in their life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hey, these guys are good, April 21, 2005
This review is from: Of Malice & The Magnum Heart (Audio CD)
My last Cd purchase prior to this was like forever ago. That is because I am a picky son of a gun. I am always looking for that heavy emotional well thought out music and am totally against all those bands out there that do all that "recycled riffing." Thankfully, my friend told me about Misery Signals. And I gotta say I love em! Nothin' but Technical Atmospheric Metalcore! Haha. They're like the Dream Theater of Hardcore man. Get this CD guys. If you don't like these guys and you like heavy music, then I will not hesitate to say that you are STUPID.

4.0 out of 5 stars Intense, emotional metalcore, April 7, 2005

This review is from: Of Malice & The Magnum Heart (Audio CD)
Welcome to Misery Signals, a band rising from the ashes of the disbanded 7 Angels 7 Plagues. With their first full length release, Misery Signals shows us the their uncanny ability to emote with a metal serenade. Every aspect of muscianship on this album is superb, from the distorted guitars played brilliantly beside each other to the bass guitar which backs the collage in a refreshingly different way than most modern metal bands (i.e. not just the same notes all the time). But the real show stealer here is the drums... my god this man is a genius... not too flashy, so you might not notice it at first, but everything is so well thought out with timing changes at perfect intervals... just a pefect backbone to this band. The singing is pretty much standard fare if you listen to this genre, nothing to rave about but still good, though there is a little bit of a change in the norm on the last track, Difference of Veangeance and Wrongs. The only problem with this album is there are a few forgettable tracks. It's nothing unforgivable as every track has its merits, but a few are just not as good as the really standout ones. Overall, if you enjoy this type of music, you simply cannot go wrong with this band, I recommend them to all my friends on a constant basis.

MUST LISTEN: Five Years. Best song on the album and a song that is absolute metal perfection, especially the ending.

Other standout tracks: The Year Summer Ended in June, Worlds and Dreams, In Summary of What I Am
