Editorial Reviews

Soon after this young keyboard wiz emigrated from Czechoslovakia to the U.S. (and a couple years before he joined the Mahavishnu Orchestra), he and his trio recorded this inspired live 1969 performance. This is nothing less than Jan Hammer's recording debut, originally released by the German jazz label MPS and now debuting on CD: Make Love; Responsibility; Goat's Song; Maliny Maliny; Waltz for Ivona , and more!

I took a real chance on this one because there was no review on it and it was mighty expensive for a CD, and no ability to preview the tracks. SO let me be the first to alleviate that problem and say this recording is GREAT and worth every penny. It is a re-release of an MPS (German) recording of the LP "Make Love" (which I actually have somewhere in my vinyl collection). Very appropriate because this 24-bit remastered CD is itself a recreation of a vinyl album. It is BLACK plastic, very cool, and the topside even has "grooves" in it like an LP would have. Very nice presentation. As for the container, the picture here shows the outer protective paper sleeve that wraps around the CD's actual paperboard sleeve which is a fold-out cardboard sleeve /record cover replica.

But enough about cosmetics and such-- Now for the music: First, please know this is a straight-ahead JAZZ recording, pre-fusion days in 1968 (for some context, Miles' "In a Silent Way" with Zawinul's writing and revolutionary keyboards wouldn't be released until about a year later). The music is influenced by funky rhythms though, a la Horace Silver or Joe Zawinul from the early 60s, but it always swings. This is a LIVE recording from "The Domicile" in Munich, Aug. 30, 1968, and you hear the crowd ambience and response; I love live recordings because you are getting the energy in the room, and you get the very best performance from the musicians during a live gig. In addition to a very young (20 years old), very jazz-oriented Jan Hammer, fellow Czech George Mraz is on upright bass (also very young -- 24 yrs.). Cees Cee is the drummer.
