Editorial Reviews

This third volume of Malipiero's symphonies features the most widely played of all his Symphonies, the
strikingly original Sixth (for strings) from 1947. The adventurous, at times dissonant Fifth, with its
concertante part for two pianos, juxtaposes chamber and orchestral textures. From the 1960s come the
Eleventh (of the bagpipes), which features drone-like ostinati, and the colourfully scored Eighth (Short
Symphony). Volumes 1 and 2 are available on Naxos 8.570878 and 8.570879.

5. Sinfonia No. 5 'Concertante in eco': Allegro agitato ma moderatamente
6. Sinfonia No. 5 'Concertante in eco': Lento
7. Sinfonia No. 5 'Concertante in eco': Allegro vivace ma ritmato
8. Sinfonia No. 5 'Concertante in eco': Lento ma non troppo - Mosso (agitato) - Ritenuto (quasi funebre)

Great to see that Naxos has reissued this series of Malipiero symphonies first published by Marco Polo, although the original CD, as of writing, sells cheaper than the budget reissue: see MALIPIERO: Symphonies Nos. 5, 6, 8 and 11.

The outstanding liner notes by John Waterhouse on the original CD said about everything that needed to be said about the 6th Symphony from 1947, which opens the CD: that, being written for strings alone, it can be best compared with Malipiero's "eight fine, ebulliently inventive quartets" (which I have by G.F. Malipiero: The 8 String Quartets - cheaper found now as Complete String Quartet - and I concur with the description) rather than with his other symphonies; that the composer makes a widespread use, especially in the outer movements, of concertante interactions between "continuo" and "ripieno", e.g. various groupings of solo strings and the full string orchestra, as in a baroque concerto grosso, fittingly reminding us that the composer was also a musicologist, president of the Istituto Italiano Antonio Vivaldi and the editor of several volumes of the Red Priest's instrumental music. What the notes don't quite say is that the music's is intensely lyrical, even in its more boisterous moments (3rd movement), without ever lapsing into trite Romantic sentimentality.
