Book Description

November 2004 7 and up Mallory550L (What's this?)
When eight-and-a-half-year-old Mallory McDonald's parents tell her that they are moving, she's mad--really mad! It's not fair! How can they make her move away from Mary Ann, her best friend in the whole wide world? Who will she paint her toenails with, tell secrets to, and make scrapbooks with? When Mallory arrives at her new house on Wish Pond Road, things are terrible. Her room is too small and the girl next door is mean. But Joey lives next door, too. Even though he doesn't paint his toes, he tells jokes, helps teach her cat to do tricks, and shows her how to skateboard. Mallory's having so much fun she forgets the pact she made with Mary Ann never to make friends with a boy next door. But, when Mary Ann comes to visit, what will Mallory do? Will she have to choose between her best friend and her new friend?

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4-Despite "Operation-Convince-My-Mom-that-Moving-and-Leaving-Behind-My-Best-Friend-Is-a-Bad-Idea," eight-year-old Mallory's parents go forward with their plans. On Wish Pond Road, three hours away from her best friend, all of the houses look alike but there is a wishing pond that she can't wait to try out. Even though she pinkie swore with Mary Ann that she wouldn't play with the boy next door, Mallory has fun with Joey. When Mary Ann comes to visit, Mallory must learn how to balance both friendships. Large-type print, an open format, and humorous illustrations make the book accessible to newly confident chapter-book readers. Mallory is an appealing character who deserves a place alongside Junie B. Jones, Judy Moody, Amber Brown, and Clarice Bean. This amusing offering makes a good choice for youngsters who are adjusting to new environs.-Debbie Stewart Hoskins, Grand Rapids Public Library, MI

From Booklist

Gr. 2-4. Eight-year-old Mallory doesn't want to move. Not only is she going to a new town, she's leaving best-friend-forever Mary Ann. Though making new friends isn't easy, neighbor Joey unexpectedly proves he's buddy material. Unfortunately, loyal Mallory can't bring herself to tell Mary Ann about Joey--until Mary Ann comes to visit and Mallory must figure out how to balance the old friend and the new one. The cartoony illustrations are generic, but the first-person narrative, written in short, descriptive sentences, is accessible and entertaining as it highlights some of the difficulties of moving, particularly making connections. Mallory is a lively, appealing character with a penchant for jokes (which are scattered throughout) and creative endeavors that have some comical, mixed results. Readers will relate to her thoughts and experiences, from familiar girlfriend activities and sibling issues to the rewards of friendships, old and new, near and far. Shelle Rosenfeld

4.0 out of 5 stars "Moving is a big deal!" October 4, 2004
Format:School & Library Binding
Eight-year old Mallory McDonald is forced to move several hours away from her best friend. Mallory and Mary Ann are next-door-neighbors that do everything together. They love to paint their toenails blue, tell jokes about Mallory's older brother, and say everything three, three, three times! Mallory's family moves, despite her pitiful begging, to a new house where Mallory discovers her new neighbor is a boy! Yuck. Mallory promised Mary Ann that she would never become best friends with a boy.

Once the family is settled, Mary Ann comes to visit Mallory in the new house. Although Mallory is quite loyal to her old friend, she discovers it hasn't been that easy to make new friends, but Joey has certainly been a cheerful companion when she is feeling blue. Perhaps three isn't a crowd...

Mary Ann is quite deceptive with her many plots and schemes. Mallory is persuaded to do something that causes turmoil within the McDonald family. How far will she go to save this friendship?

Most children would enjoy the book, although I found the plot to be quite predictable. Mallory's school life is never mentioned, which is a huge issue for children moving to a new town. As an older reader, I wished the parents had played a more crucial role in Mallory's move. It seemed as though she had to deal with many of her feelings alone. Her father does share the moral of the story near the end of the book as Mallory and Mary Ann realize they will never be neighbors again. "True friends are still friends even when you move apart and meet new people." I recommend the book for grades 2-5.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mallory is MAGICAL!! March 22, 2004
Format:School & Library Binding
Bravo to Mrs. Friedman - she has done it again! Mrs. Friedman knows children, how they think, and what motivates them. My daughters and I enjoyed reading this book together every night. Mallory's life inspired some great conversations and many laughs along the way. I can't wait to read the next installation and to discover what adventures Mrs. Friedman has in store for this fiesty young woman.
