Book Description

When fourteen year old Helen Stroud finds herself starting yet another new school, miles away from her friends, she's not happy. This time she won't even get to see her old friends at weekends, let alone after school. Somehow her mum has got a job as music teacher at an elite girls' boarding school, St. Mallory's, and Helen is to be one of the boarders.

From "scuzzy comprehensive" to a world of Latin, lacrosse and ladylike pursuits, Helen blogs about her experiences, determined to reveal the truth about girls' boarding schools to an unsuspecting world. Meanwhile her appointed "buddy" Abby has similar ideas. The two girls completely fail to hit it off, and it looks like lacrosse sticks at dawn.

But an unexpected mystery involving a missing teacher, a piece of music written by a composer after he died, and a boy from a neighbouring school who isn't at all what he seems, brings the girls together.

With the aid of another new girl, Confucius-spouting Xuan, and the irrepressible Don Pedro, Helen and Abby set out to show Miss Marple and Sherlock Holmes how real detectives work. With hilarious results!

Jointly written by the award-winning, best-selling Saffina Desforges partnership and two schoolgirl debut novelists (just 16 and 17 at time of publication), St. Mallory's Forever! is the first of the St. Mallory's comedy-mystery series that aims to prove one thing:

That everything you thought you knew about English girls' boarding schools is wrong.

Yes, even that bit!

St. Mallory's Forever!

Anca's Story

Three young children smuggle themselves into Auschwitz in search for their parents.

If you're looking for werewolves, vampires and faeries and paranormal fantasy, try somewhere else. The only wolf in this story is very real, and the only connection with vampires is the distant Transylvanian mountains in Romania, where this story begins.

If you're looking for light-reading where they all live happily ever after then again, try somewhere else.

If you want serious, no-holds-barred literary fiction set against the background of real historic events then this is for you.

Saffina Desforges made her name writing hard-hitting crime fiction.

This book is about that most horrific crime of all: genocide.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great debut novel September 1, 2013
By Leinad

I don't expect I'll ever be a published author: I enjoy writing, but I don't take it quite that seriously -- I just write stories for fun. But I love to hear about fellow teenagers getting published. As soon as St Mallory's Forever! came out, I rushed out (or rather, turned on my Kindle) and bought the book. I was not disappointed. Christopher Paolini is the only other teen-author whose published books I've read, but while it is very difficult to compare St. Mallory's Forever! with the Inheritance Cycle, given that they are such different genres, Charley Robson and Miriam Joy join Paolini as inspiring teens.

St. Mallory's Forever! is written by Charley Robson (17 years old), Miriam Joy (still 16 years old by a whisker when the book came out) and Saffina Desforges (Who I think is actually a partnership: two people. I don't think either of them are teenagers.). It strikes me as incredible that a novel could be co-authored. I mean, a biography, maybe, but in a novel surely everyone would have different ideas as to where the story should go? Nevertheless, the plot was remarkably coherent and differences in writing style were managed by the fact that the story alternates between the points of view different people. Here is a fairly spoiler-free summary of the story:

It's the start of a new term at St. Mallory's, a boarding school where rather posh families send their girls to be educated. Abbie and Teresa are returning, and there will be two new students in their grade this year -- whose names are rumoured to be Helen and Zoo-Anne. After a few relational mishaps, Helen and Zoo-Anne (whose name turns out to be Xuan -- pronounced "shin") become good friends with Abbie and Teresa.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is, in a single word, FUN. February 19, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Formatted as blog posts written from three different perspectives, St. Mallory's Forever! is a mystery set at an English boarding school for girls, and it's chock-full of geeky references, humor, and plenty of crazy situations and adventures! The book focuses on three main characters: Abby (a veteran student at St. Mallory's), Helen (new student and daughter of the new music teacher), and Xuan (pronounced "Shin" - new student and daughter of the Chinese ambassador), as well as their internet-savvy friend Don Pedro. Each of them is unique and interesting, although my favorite is probably Xuan - she's a bit snarky, but in an entertaining way, and I loved reading her chapters! But although Xuan might be my favorite, I'm fond of all of the girls; each one adds something great to the story, and I really like their newfound friendships with each other.

I also like the way an unlikely mystery is combined with undeniably realistic elements. From the cringe-worthy, real life awkwardness and embarrassing mistakes to the nerdy jokes and references to Harry Potter, the Lord of the Rings, Dr. Who, all added a kind of authenticity that made it even more enjoyable.

Characters aside, though, one of the things I thought was truly great about St. Mallory's Forever! is its readability. It's engagingly written, with an easy-going feel that fits the blog post format perfectly. With its light, comedic tone, I was sucked into the story with ease, and looked forward to going back to it every time I put it down! And, almost as a bonus, the chapter length only served to add to the allure; each one was short enough that at night in bed, even if it was past when I should have shut off my lamp, I could justify saying "just one more chapter...

4.0 out of 5 stars Nancy Drew Goes To Boarding School. February 1, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Reading is an act of writer-abetted imagination; good writers can take you to places you've never been, introduce you to characters you've never met, pitch you into situations that you would never in a million years get into, and make you see, experience, and feel the story as if it happened to you. The collaborative team of St. Mallory's Forever! pull it off nicely; being completely unfamiliar with what is apparently a whole body of literature (boarding school stories), I still finished the book with a chuckle and the enjoyment of getting to know four unusual girls--Helen, Abby, Xuan (pronounced "Shin" in Mandarin), and the Don (pronounced "Teresa", don't ask). The story unfolds through a series of blog posts as the girls get to know each other and uncover the mystery that drives the plot, with, of course, the moments of comic misunderstandings and embarrassments that forge friendships. St. Mallory's Forever! is a light and engaging read, perfect if you have a lazy weekend ahead.

1.0 out of 5 stars Amateur Hour April 3, 2015
Format:Kindle Edition
The foreword to this book, by Mark Williams, "the quiet half of the Saffina Desforges writing partnership", states that he read "Eleanor Brent Dyer's 'Chalet School'.", together with Angela Brazil and Enid Blyton's "Malory Towers and St. Clares [sic]". Chapter 1 again refers to "Eleanor Brent Dyer", and doesn't appear to know that St Trinian's did not originate with the 2007 film. There are frequent jarring Americanisms in what purports to be an English girls' boarding school story. I do not think that the book was professionally edited, as there are quite a lot of typos. In other words, don't waste your money. Elinor M. Brent-Dyer (60+ novels just in the 'Chalet School' series), and cartoonist Ronald Searle must be turning in their graves.
