I use this canoe carrier kit on top of my Honda Civic 2-door, and have had no complaints. I'm glad to have such a simple solution to carrying a canoe on my car. It came with everything that I needed, including straps.

This is a great starter package for anyone with a canoe. Although I recommend getting cinch or rachet straps for the front of the car/canoe instead of the ropes included, they are still a good place to start if you don't have anything. The cinch strap works great and is good quality. I also purchased other foam blocks and these are way better because they're longer (rectangular shaped) and more sturdy. They have a rubber grip pad attached if you are putting them directly onto your roof so they don't slip, and the cutouts work get to lock them in place onto any roof rack with cross bars. I highky recommend these.

I was a little reluctant going in, as I'm a "you get what you pay for" guy. I put the canoe on the roof of a Chevrolet Impala, strapped it down (there are two cinch belts in the package although the picture only shows one), tied off the front and back and hit the road. I stopped every 20 miles or so just to make sure the lines were tight. The canoe didn't move the entire trip driving at 55 mph. If I never use it again, it was well worth the money. I'll see if I can post a picture.

Needed an inexpensive way to transport my canoe to my son's house in PA. This did the trick very well. I purchased extra lashing straps due to the fact that I was driving 8 hours at highway speeds. This is a real nice product for rooftop canoe or kayak transport.

Canoe Carrier a simple solution,

We needed to move a canoe from 1 property to another. This provided a quick, easy solution. We used it with our full size van. It was easy attach and worked fine. We only used it one time, but I could see it being a good solution for someone transporting a canoe on a regular basis.

This is all you need to throw a canoe on top of your car. I recommend not using the S-hooks (they can come off in the wind under some circumstances), and I *highly* recommend buying the Thule loops that let you attach the straps under your hood (they're ~6" loops of nylon webbing with a grommet that you bolt under your hood). Otherwise, you'll be hunting for attachment points under your car that may or may not exist.
This kit worked great, and I'm very glad that I didn't spend $60-$70 on the kits at retail stores.

Exactly What I Needed!,

These universal car top canoe blocks worked perfectly. I used them for a 14 1/2 foot canoe on top of a Toyota 4-Runner and it worked out great. The 4-Runner is a little narrrow, so I was only able to attach 1 set of blocks to the roof rack. The other set rests in the front of the vehicle, just a few inches from the sunroof. Minimal amounts of movement if you have the thing strapped down as instructed by the packaging. So far, this product seems like an awesome affordable option for canoe transportation :)

Good foam, worthless ropes/straps,

Not a bad product, but I would not trust the ropes to keep a canoe secure for a long trip. I'm much more comfortable using ratchet straps instead. The blocks are nice though, and fit perfectly on my roof rack.

I think the only thing worth really buying was the foam blocks because they are crucial for putting the canoe on the car. It didn't work as planned because the canoe is wider than the rack that I have in place so I was not able to put the blocks directly on the rack. I was able to make it work however with the blocks wedged against the rack. The ropes and straps are just basic ropes and with my canoe I had to use a different rope for the back because the one was not long enough. I also would prefer ropes that do not require knot expertise. The canoe strap works well but they are sold at Home Depot and are nothing special. My recommendation for someone else is to buy the pieces you need separately such as straps, foam blocks, rope. I purchased a ratcheting tie down to further tigten it down on top. So overall it worked but if I had it to do again I would buy the pieces separately and not as a kit. For someone who does not want to go to the trouble of buying the items individually it is a good deal but you probably will still need another rope if you have a 17 foot canoe.

I drive a Honda fit (tiny car) and have a 17' fiberglass canoe (big canoe) that I only use once or twice a year. I used to borrow a gas guzzling SUV to transport my canoe. Not anymore. This product is simple, inexpensive, and works great. My canoe is approx 3 feet longer than my car and yes it looks silly, but it's functional. I wouldn't reccomend this for ever day use or say its better than a traditional roof rack. But if you've gotta get your canoe to the water and don't have a vehicle appropriate, this is a great solution. This product has essentially converted my little MPG machine into a fully functional SUV for my annual canoe trip. As long as you tie it down to both the front and rear of the car and use both straps through the doors or windows (ropes, straps, and instructions included), your canoe will stay firmly planted on your roof without scratching your paint. I drove in excess of 70 mph and handling and control stayed very manageable. If you use your canoe on a regular basis you may want to bite the bullet and buy a proper roof rack, otherwise you can't go wrong here. My local outfitter wanted over $100 for a similar setup (foam blocks & straps), but with prime shipping I saved a ton of cash to buy more beer for the coolers :-) |
