A Gentle Tale of Hope Told Simply and Well.,
By
This review is from: Mama Cat (Paperback)
This slim and sly volume is one you need to buy BEFORE your child discovers the special pain of a deceased and dearly loved animal. Put this in your bookshelf NOW and take it out every couple of months or so-- that way when you need it, it'll already be a "family classic" and familiar, thus more comforting. The sunny yellow cover, deliciously evocative ink drawings, and subtly supple prose let a child fantazize about the afterlife of his beloved housecat (here a savvy orange tabby named Eames) in the most positive way. By letting the pet paint a picture of "A field someplace, "Past the farthest hill, "Where kitties and cats play all day "Where they can always eat their fill," I appreciate the vision of a peaceful end coming not from a parent/authority figure but from the animal itself describing where she is (naturally and easily) going. (I know this would make ME much more comfortable!) Children small or children grown, maybe astray, solitary, fit but looking for hope--all would do well to tuck "Mama Cat" in the bookshelf. One day soon you'll reap its comfort.
