More About the Author

I was one of those kids always noodling with words, writing nonsense stories and animal adventures. I got a serious case of the word flu when I was asked to write an article for my high school newspaper. It was a disease from which I have yet to recover.

In the intervening years, my work has appeared in daily newspapers, monthly magazines, extensively on radio -- and the occasional dalliance with television. I have a bucket filled with awards sitting in my garage and continue to write, write and write. I have created advertising copy and written radio commercials.

Also featuring my byline are the novel "News on the Home Front," the children's book "Mama Cat," several short plays, several radio plays, and too many unpublished novels. I am currently collaborating on a history of melamine plastic.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Gentle Tale of Hope Told Simply and Well., January 13, 2004
By
This review is from: Mama Cat (Paperback)
This slim and sly volume is one you need to buy BEFORE your child discovers the special pain of a deceased and dearly loved animal. Put this in your bookshelf NOW and take it out every couple of months or so-- that way when you need it, it'll already be a "family classic" and familiar, thus more comforting.
The sunny yellow cover, deliciously evocative ink drawings, and subtly supple prose let a child fantazize about the afterlife of his beloved housecat (here a savvy orange tabby named Eames) in the most positive way.
By letting the pet paint a picture of
"A field someplace,
"Past the farthest hill,
"Where kitties and cats play all day
"Where they can always eat their fill,"
I appreciate the vision of a peaceful end coming not from a parent/authority figure
but from the animal itself describing where she is (naturally and easily) going.
(I know this would make ME much more comfortable!)
Children small or children grown, maybe astray, solitary, fit but looking for hope--all would do well to tuck "Mama Cat" in the bookshelf. One day soon you'll reap its comfort.
