From School Library Journal
PreSchool-- A rhyming text relates all about the new baby--how it came from the mother's tummy; that it cries, eats, and sleeps a lot; that the sibling narrator is a helper; and that there is plenty of love to go around. Gewing's reassuring tone and matter-of-fact attitude neither generates excitement nor creates any interest. The first-person narrative sounds more like an adult's voice than that of a child: "When the baby is ready Mama knows. Away to the hospital with Daddy she goes." The alternating black-and-white and color illustrations are realistically drawn, and the infant is particularly well depicted. This is an adequate presentation in a subject area that boasts numerous superior titles; Lasky's A Baby for Max (Scribners, 1984), Rogers' The New Baby (Putnam, 1985), and Walter's My Mama Needs Me (Lothrop, 1983) are only a few. --Karen K.
