Image of Emily Wells

Emily Wells has long been turning heads with her unique songcraft. The performer, producer and songwriter trades in a striking mix of classical instrumentation, folk rawness and hip-hop production anchored by her haunting combination of voice and violin. Her burgeoning reputation owes as much to her hypnotic live show where, working a looping pedal, Wells becomes a one-woman orchestra, playing ... Read more in Amazon's Emily Wells Store

Editorial Reviews

Releasing her own music from a young age, Wells learned to keep her work close, and toured independently while developing her palate and performance across the U.S. It was in a humble garage studio in Los Angeles that Well s recorded her 2008 breakthrough, The Symphonies: Dream Memories & Parties, picking up praise from sources as varied as NPR and SPIN, who compared her to a feral, streetwise Nina Simone. 2012 will find Wells touring behind Mama and preparing for the release of Pillowfight, her long whispered-about collaboration with legendary producer Dan the Automator.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite album of the year. December 24, 2012
By michael
Format:Vinyl|Verified Purchase
The lyrics are so subtle and beautiful, and simple, but the star of the album is the amazing music composition. Never, I would say, has influences such as hip hop, folk, electronic, classical, and traditional found a home so perfect as on this album. Emily Wells crafts stunning songs with a deft hand, and this is absolutely a must listen.

My title says it all. This woman is extremely talented. Have you ever caught her live show? SHE DOES IT ALL BY HERSELF! She' a one woman band! And this album is great. Buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A True Original April 13, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Just saw Emily at live at the Philly World Cafe and she is such a engaging and gifted artist. So rare to see someone really doing their "own thing" with such energy. Love this album - she is really on to something new here. See her live and you won't regret it. PS - she did a ripping cover of "Fever" at the end of the set-- hope she records it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another home run April 11, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I was a little concerned I wouldn't be into her new sound. Honestly, some of the tracks that I heard prior to the release struck me as repetitive. Thankfully, magically, they were fine-tuned and produced in such a way that I can't figure out why I was having doubts. This is an album that you'll love to listen to as an album, at full volume, on a nice sound system. Whatever Emily is doing, she needs to keep doing it, because this album sounds phenomenal, just as her two previous albums did. While the music is unmistakably her, she's done well to give each album its own identity. Mama doesn't disappoint. I can't wait to see where she goes next.
