A great resource that would make a thoughtful, unique gift!,
By
This review is from: Mama Knows Breast (Paperback)
In short, this is a quick, easy, interesting read that will make an excellent gift for a mother - new or experienced. The author has an engaging tone and a moderate, non-judgmental voice that should make any mother feel at ease, even if she ends up supplementing or not breastfeeding at all. I would feel totally comfortable giving this as a gift, without feeling pushy towards the mother.
The illustrations are quirky and the text is light and humorous. I enjoyed that because breastfeeding can be very stressful, scary and downright painful to a new mother. Per my quick Amazon searches, there simply aren't many fun, positive books regarding breastfeeding. Who wants to read a textbook if they don't have to? I'd rather have a friend holding my hand - and this book does just that by walking you through it in a reassuring and comforting manner. Again, I think this would be a great, unique gift for a mother planning to breastfeed.

A must-have for nursing mothers!,
By
This review is from: Mama Knows Breast (Paperback)
Andi Silverman's new book, "Mama Knows Breast: A Beginner's Guide to Breastfeeding" mamaknowsbreast.com) is fun to read, easy to digest, attractive to look at and packed with "real life" tips, resources and "how to" information on nursing that acknowledges breastfeeding isn't always as easy as it looks. Kudos to Andi for birthing a great resource for moms! For so many mothers, myself included, nursing was not as simple as sticking our child on the breast--this wonderful resource acknowledges the realities of nursing and supports mothers emotionally and physically during this important time. I look forward to recommending it to all my Personal Renewal Group Facilitators! ReneeTrudeau.com, life balance coach and author of "The Mother's Guide to Self-Renewal."

This was a funny book about the problems every new mother faces when learning how to breastfeed, but it doesn't offer much instruction. There is only one page of illustrations on the four different breastfeeding positions. Another page with one illustration on the proper latch. Not much help to a new mother who is trying to figure out how to get the baby to latch properly so she isn't in so much pain. "The Ultimate Breastfeeding Book of Answers" by Newman and Pitman had many black and white photographs that I found more helpful as a new mom. A DVD would probably be even more helpful in learning the positions and proper latch.

The best new parent book,
By
This review is from: Mama Knows Breast (Paperback)
Mama Knows Breast was given to me as a gift when I first got pregnant and it has been by far the best new parent book I have read to date. Being pregnant with my first I always expected to breastfeed but didn't know anything about the trials and tribulations and overall what to expect. This book is written in a fun, informative, non judgmental way. Unlike 99.9% of the other new parent books I have read this book didn't create a severe panic attack in me but helped me feel more prepared, confident, excited, and open minded! I have since given this book to other pregnant friends but refuse to lend out my copy (I know I will need it as a reference when my little girl arrives next month).

It includes the practical aspects of fitting breastfeeding into your life (such as "operating instructions," different nursing positions, potential problems and solutions), together with easy-to-read chapters and answers to every possible lactation-learner question. An added bonus is this book's sturdy yet useful size - just right for one hand while the other is busy with baby!!

Fun Breastfeeding "Manual" for Moms,
By Robin Elise Weiss "Robin Elise Weiss, LCCE, F... (Louisville, KY United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mama Knows Breast (Paperback)
Andi Silverman has written a really down to earth breastfeeding book. The text is filled with truthful and humorous quotes from moms and interesting data points, enough to make you laugh at 3 a.m. while you're feeding. The illustrations are also very sleek, educational and entertaining.
I counsel new mothers all the time and this is the positive, easy-to-read text to help get them through some of the more practical issues that they deal with on a day-to-day basis with their babes, from figuring out how to breastfeed in public, to answering the inevitable questions about breastfeeding, to keeping connected to their partners...and Silverman does it all with flare and style.

This book had me laughing as well as learning. I wished many times that I would have had a book like this when I had my son. I felt so pressured by the hospital and my nurses. This would have taken a little bit of the pressure of me and my boobs. LOL This is a feel good book that I recommend to any new mom looking for a light hearted take on breast feeding. If you want a more in depth book then seek out a more informative tome. There are many to choose from! Have fun and enjoy your babies.

A can't miss gift idea for the expectant mother,
By
This review is from: Mama Knows Breast (Paperback)
My wife and I have made a habit of giving this book to expectant mothers (and fathers!). The book is written with such a reasonable attitude, as opposed to the "militant" style of some authors who have a "my way or the highway" attitude about this subject. That is what makes this such a good gift - it puts the mother at ease, and it isn't at all like we are imposing a viewpoint on anyone. (We don't even have kids ourselves, let alone a viewpoint!)
We seem to be in the "baby boom" years among our social circle, and so we just buy a handful at a time and grab one off the shelf to wrap up each time someone else announces a pregnancy. So far, every single recipient has been really grateful. One mother told us it was the first baby book that put her at ease, rather than causing more anxiety. |
