I liked the crunchy feel to this book and the pictures of the parents slinging their babies and birthing in a tub, however as a midwifery lend for clients I might caution against it if you are anti doppler or hatting newborns(which I am). No a bad intro to home birth though.

Awesome book for home-birth parents to get for the older child. My 3 year old loved it and I think she learned a lot.

My daughter has loved this book from the moment she got it. We purchased it about 6 months after my son was born at home in the water, so my (3 year old) daughter could really relate to the story. She also loves that "Max" sounds similar to her brother's name, "Axel". This book is informative, peaceful, and has beautiful illustrations. The only thing my daughter does not like about this book (and this says nothing about the quality of this fantastic book as it is a story of Max's birth) is that Presleigh, the little girl, leaves their house before Max is born and comes back after. She says "But I was IN our house for Axel's birth!"

She is 6 now and we are expecting our 3rd child. She reads it all the time and even reads it to her little brother. (3 years old)

This is definitely one of her favorite books.

Borrowed this book from our midwife and it's already a "hit" with our 2.5 year old! Since baby #2 isn't due to arrive for another few months, I know we'll be reading this one many times yet. :)
PROS
+Story tells about the pregnancy AND birth day (so many books for "big sister" but not a ton available dealing with prenatal checkups, waiting for baby, preparations, etc.)
+Depicts a home-birth & water-birth without explicit nakedness (Mom is shown in tub with bra on; underwater body parts are not drawn; Mom exiting birth tub is wrapped in a towel; breastfeeding is discreet)
+Aspects of homebirth are mentioned/shown... birth kit, filling the tub, candles/darkness, big sister leaving with Grandma for awhile as labor progresses, midwives waiting and filling out paperwork, midwives & doula saying g'bye until 2-day check-up

CONS
-The narrating voice of the story is a little confusing. Seems to switch tenses a couple of times and go from 1st to 2nd person. Made it a little difficult as a read-aloud story.
-Illustrations of people are pretty "angular" reminds me of anime a little; not badly drawn, just not my style.
-"Dad" is missing from the first several pages (including the prenatal midwife appts). "Nana" is shown early on but not named until midway though (and she looks very similar in age to "Mom"). Strange on both accounts.
