5.0 out of 5 stars The unexpected heroine and the yuppie

The first time I saw this movie, I thought it was quite good. However, something bothered me but I wouldn't quite put my finger on it. Then I watched it again. Voilá! I got it! 5.0 out of 5 stars The unexpected heroine and the yuppie, October 27, 2003
This review is from: Mama, There's a Man in Your Bed [VHS] (VHS Tape)
In Finland this was named: "Mama, there's a white man in your bed!" as one of Juliette's children says in the movie. A nice twist that makes you wonder, what the movie is about.

I saw this on TV and was later very happy to find the video about these unexpected lovers, Romuald and Juliette. Romuald is a real yuppie, a director of Blanlait-company that makes yoghurt and is aiming to conquer new international markets. Juliette is an African cleaning-woman in the same company - and when she moves around unseen by 'important people' and empties the waste baskets, she stumbles on the office plots, which escape the director entirely, as he is being busy and powerful. And then one day everything seems to go wrong and Romuald works late to find out, what really happened...

Juliette comes in and suddenly asks, why he doesn't contact one of his employees. "Because he's in Lyon", Romuald answers politely but arrogantly. "People aren't always where you think they are", Juliette says. She asks him to call the man at his home in Paris and dictate to the answering machine: "I know everything, it has all come out" and in less than 15 minutes the man would come. And he should also call home, because her wife isn't there. And she leaves - and finally he calls. Juliette was right...

So starts this coalition: Romuald asks Juliette about everything, about his own secretary, money laundering, poisoning at the factory and so on - and lives in the run down apartement of Juliette and her children - all with different fathers. He hides from problems and acts like a polite but selfish hotel guest. Until he leaves to take back his place in the Blanlait company and his family. And realizes, he's in love with Juliette - who in turn has had enough of him. Romuald must win her over.

Daniel Auteuil (Romuald) is really charming in this movie, his haircut is by the way very becoming. He doesn't look this good in most of his movies. And Firmine Richard is delightful - as are the children. I've seen this over and over again, it is a really nice movie, it believes in people and goodness though shows people as flawed as they are - cheating wives and husbands, selfish children and plotting business men. If you're down and you can't think of a sure pick-me-up, this is it.

5.0 out of 5 stars I fell in love, November 14, 2002

I fell in love watching this film with a girl, and now she's my wife! Magnifique, but let's have the original name back. And for that matter, let's get some reprints of the video, or even better, a release on DVD, as we can't find a new copy anywhere!
one of the funniest most unknown feel-good films out there!

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh change the title back... please..., June 16, 2002

This review is from: Mama, There's a Man in Your Bed [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is such a magnificent film. I saw it on english TV almost a decade ago and I still remember that feelgood factor.

Its so great to know that there are films that don't rely on sex, violence and special effects. Who needs that when you've got a great storyline, great actors and direction.

Hollywood has a lot to learn about making great films. They seem to only know how to make big bucks.

Hopefully this title'll become available in the UK eventually. I think I'd even buy a DVD player especially for this should it ever get DVD release.

The name change though, I didn't even know it had been changed for the American market till I saw it here on Amazon. Why oh why?

Did the americans rename Amelie to "Honey, I sent the gnome"?

5.0 out of 5 stars Starts as suspense, ends as romance, December 7, 2005

This review is from: Mama, There's a Man in Your Bed [VHS] (VHS Tape)
When I saw this film for a film class years ago, it was called "Romauld et Juliette" and it had subtitles. It was then released here under this title, which hardly gives the impression of a lovely, moving, surprising film that starts with implications of white-collar crime but ends up with a joyful meshing of relationships. At least the "American remake" never happened--and I hope it never does. This film is perfect as it is.

This is one of my favourite films. I laughed, I cried -- you get the point. A touching romantic comedy that keeps you at each moment and twist. The ending is abit predictable and inevitable, but it's very much good fun getting there!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my newest favorite films!, May 20, 2004

A funny film! I really love the leads in this film. Daniel Auteuil is great, as always! He's got a great body of work and this comedy doesn't taint but adds to the shine of his film career!

Even though the film is a comedy, there is a lot to say about the social issues embedded in the story. Class, race, crime and gender relations all play an important part in the film.

This film should not be remade in any language. It should stay intact the way it is and seen by everyone!

The first time I saw this movie, I thought it was quite good. However, something bothered me but I wouldn't quite put my finger on it. Then I watched it again. Voilá! I got it! This is SUPPOSED to be a love story, yet the lovers are NEVER shown kissing! There is quick scene of lovemaking but never once the show of real intimacy and deeper expression of a beautiful kiss. Not one kiss. This disappointed me. Suddenly, I didn't like this movie nearly as much. It seems the makers of this movie fell into the trap of the fantasy among some white men of having sex with a black woman just to see what it is like. The chose not to see beyond this fantasy with a portrayal of true love and respect for the black woman outside the bedroom. And when the CEO introduces the black men who were the woman's ex-husbands, he does so in a very nonchalant dismissive way. A sad ploy for cheap laughs and were anyone ever introduced in such a tacky way, they would likely NOT stand there smiling in gratitude for the insult. Maybe someday, this movie will be remade in such a way that the people of color are portrayed as worthy of deep abiding love from their white lovers. This is a movie worth seeing because it has some real potential. Watch the movie, but please pay attention.

A wonderful love story with a story book ending. 5 stars is not enough. When destiny leads the CEO and the cleaning lady to fall in love, it is the most heart-warming merger on the French Wall Street.

Truly indicates that true love knows no color. Daniel Auteuil gives a great performance, his character develops in a very heartwarming way after he sees how the "other half" lives. Highly recommended
